Kills me. My Dad was involved selling steel wire to GM for decades. Told me how ellated engineers were to save an once of weight here and there. Along comes Bob that throws a few hundred pounds of weight in his half ton just for traction.

He can also take it out. I carry a snowsled most of the winter; mostly to get around where the truck can't yet it also serves as good weight on snow covered roads. Generally if I don't want it on I will back it into the bed of my personal truck.

Back when I worked for an alarm company in Vermont, we had a 3/4 ton work van.

We pulled everything off the floor and slid a 4x8 sheet of 1/2" plate steel in the back. We then reloaded the van. That made a huge difference.

Yeah it would. The skid of salt makes it hard to haul anything else around all winter, which is OK, because then someone else has to haul everything around instead of me. :laughing:

Many of those old engineers are probably turning over in their graves. They probably spent untold sleepless nights thinking of how to shave off a few grams. Make a plastic duct a bit thinner! Everyone should just throw up their arms and say f#$K it and do whatever pleases them I guess. All seems so counterproductive.

Also, so many years of salt in the back has rotted out the rear floor and fenders. My work van is #2 on the hit list to be replaced as funds become available. #1 is a piece O junk electric van.

Read an awful lot of "gotta have 4 wheel drive here" posts and articles over last 20 years; run onto quite a few folks in der mountaingatomatic high priced vehicles of every description. Every one tellin me how can't get to der place widout de 4x.

Keep askin how dey figure where dey live got built back before Napco come along and how de people built de place got der to build.

Seem like all dat 4X equipment spends awful lot of time in median of zipstrip too. Tow truck comes up to pull em out generally 2 wheel drive.

Too much machinery wid loose nut behind steering wheel in my opinion.

Boss's dad was the local lock Smith and a pack rat. Installed lots of safes over the years. That sheet was left over from a big install he did years earlier. Was just lying around in his garage.

4 of us had all we could do to get that sheet into the van

If only one tire on the Ford would spin, and both on the Chevy spun, then you had an open differential in the Ford and the Chevy had a positraction differential. Comparing the two is apples/oranges comparison.

My '06 F150 has a limited slip differential, and I have never had it stuck. Some of the north/south roads out here get drifted pretty badly in the winter, and it gets me through them pretty well. I normally carry six or eight bags of water softener salt or a piece of 1" steel plate I have in the bed for a little extra traction.

When I buy used vehicles I always look to see where they came from. When I bought my used Toyota FJ I saw many units for sale that came from eastern Canada. All with so much overcoat that I passed on them. Ended up buying a locally purchased unit and am very happy. Probably never saw a grain of salt.

No offense to the salt belt TBN members on here, I just do not want to buy your vehicles.
