I've owned a LOT of Jeeps. I'm not saying this one is/was my favorite. Just saying it was the coolest.

...

I always liked those. The stance, the silhouette, pretty much everything about it.

Never owned a 4wd truck, never needed one, just another maintenance problem.
If the roads are so bad you need 4wd, I stay home. Let the 4wd idiots that think it makes them able to go anywhere as fast and stop as short as if the roads were clear litter the ditches and cause accidents.

Sometimes you've gotta go out in the weather whether you want to or not. As someone else noted, around here a 2WD truck is pretty useless in the winter. If you don't need 4WD where you live, great.
That having been said, I often shake my head at the people who think that 4/AWD is somehow "safer" even in places that rarely or never see snow. A lot of it's marketing. A Suburu makes sense in New England, So Cal not so much.

Or in Florida. It's all ignorance and marketing.

A guy would have to have a lot of self confidence, and not care what others think or have, to walk into a dealership these days and buy a 2wd pickup. Also, selling it might be difficult too.

I only own one engine powered vehicle that's not 4wd, that's my Ford TLB. I hate it in the timber. Fortunately the hoe has enough power to drag it out of whatever I stumble into.....

Interesting article, but it doesn't go into the "why" of it, just some brief speculation. Statistics can be misleading...what's the ratio of 4/AWD to 2WD versions of a given vehicle. If one outsells the other 10:1, then a smaller number of accidents becomes much larger proportionately. What about the type of person who buys the 2WD model vs the 4?

I'd take this article with a grain of salt.

What do crash tests say? What does their definition of "SAFER" even mean? Avoiding an accident? Getting less hurt in an accident?

I think the Duramax comes with an anchor that I just never figured out how to raise. lol
I've had worse luck with a 2wd Ford then I have with a 2wd chevy.

My 2wd Ford would look at wet grass and get stuck. Neighbors 2wd chevy pulled it out a couple different times. The huge difference was the rear-end in the chevy.

My Ford would just spin 1 tire versus the neighbors chevy would spin both back tires.

Course there's a big difference in traction between a 1/2 ton truck versus the 3/4 and 1 ton trucks.

That stiffer suspension really effects traction as well. Add in those mediocre "All Season" tires that come stock on new trucks and wet grass becomes your mortal enemy.
