Wow Piston, that is an impressive log to lift. I would not have guessed that your loader could do that. Not sure mine could!

Looks like a satisfying project Gordon. Nicely done. How many acres do you have?

We have about 160 acres of woods and swamp and another 15 or 20 divided up into 4 small fields or open areas. It has been logged by a succession of owners for a long long time. Each one taking the best. We bought it in 1999 after a heavy liquidation cut. I am trying to give it a new start by thinning out the worst where it will help or promote new growth on the young age class trees or the few remaining decent older trees. I always have something to do in the woods but never a crises.

Neighbor's just had one a year ago. :( So much trash left standing, it'd be better if they clear cut it or mulched the rest.

Depends on your view point. Low quality trees and species of low value can make up a forest that has little monetary value but is loaded with high quality wildlife habitat and the wildlife to go with it. To some that is priceless. Also with the upswing of invasives clear cuts can be a very risky undertaking. It is becoming more and more important to use harvest prescriptions that produce advanced regeneration of desirable species rather than the cut it and just let whatever grow back.

They left low quality trees of sufficient density to ensure high quality trees don't come back to fill the void. Everything standing is 6" class, crooked, or diseased. What's left is crowded - like a bad shelter cut. Classic high-grade harvest.

The stand isn't much different than mine, only hadn't been cut as recently (larger DBH across the crop trees).

Cleaned up a post oak downed in windstorm a couple of months ago.

The entire trunk was hollow from base to top so, had to cut into two pieces as it probably wouldn't have supported it own weight, without breaking, in the grapple.

All cleaned up and just have to burn out what's left of the stump (hidden by the yaupons).
