WRLong makes a great grapple There was one period a few years back where my OBG2-72 was on the tractor and used more than the GP bucket. And, it come in handy in the hayfield too...I've used it to pickup more than a few round bales!!

I hear you My WRL doesn't know it yet but it is going to have a hard row to hoe working on our property.

Ive been poking around with my WR Long OBG2-72 for about 2 weeks now but I finally got around to really working it today. That is a freshly dug up water oak stump that weighs more than I care to try and lift with the FEL so I just drug and pushed it around. Half a grappling fun credit for grappling it out of the ground! Gotta get it up the air for full credit though. :D Anyone with a bucket can push stuff along the ground.;)

You don't even need a tractor to drag stuff along the ground. I can do that with a truck and chain ( maybe not in his circumstances become it appears pretty muddy) I find pallet forks work way better than a grapple for moving stumps.

Forks weigh as much as a light duty grapple but don't have any way of securing the stump for transport. You lose style points for needing to get off your tractor to chain the stump.

Your not tricking me that's a fake stump :D

In fairness, I used the BH to dig it out and couldn't lift the stump out of the hole. Had to use the BH to pull it up to ground level at which point I could lift it with the grapple. It was oak and filled with dirt so very heavy. Bounced it a few times to loosen dirt and then lifted it for transport about 100 yards away where it now lives happily and peacefully in the woods.

The weight of the attachment is similar, but I can get the weight much closer the the pins. Why do you have to get off the tractor to chain the stump? I have moved hundreds of stumps on pallet forks and I have never had to chain a single one.

I guess I like to strap down loads when traveling, especially over rough ground.

I have forks too but prefer to use the grapple to move stumps, trees and logs.

As a human, I could carry loads in my hand, palm up and unsecured but I generally "clamp" down with my thumb to keep the load from shifting.

I like my grapple as much as the next guy, but moving large stumps isn't its cup of tea. If I can't get the grapple to open over widest part of the root ball then the pallet forks work better. When you have to bite on the side it sticks the stump out good ways which severely compromises lift capacity. If you bounce a stump off pallet forks set in the widest position you must think you are in a demolition derby. None of your pictures show a large diameter stump. This picture posted by Diggernut shows the downfall of a grapple while moving stumps. image-2059993816.jpg

A couple of guys stopped in while I was moving logs. The one guy said "that grapple has two things on top, it works better than a grapple with one." I could not hardly keep from laughing when he said that.

Only one thing on top here -- but works perfectly well for all of my uses. Moving logs, brush piles and digging roots. It is a Frontier Root Grapple AV20H. I use it more often than any other loader attachment.

Like what I do. Find a couple projects and go for it. I've dug a few stumps out that a BX shouldn't handle but I take breaks, work somewhere else and come back to it. And loving it!

So have you come up with any techniques that work well to loosen the stumps so that you can get them out?

We have had occasional successes, but more often than not we end up frustrated by the process, and leave it for next time.

This is despite the PTBs utility in the other uses to which we put it.

Dynamite. No seriously I try to make sure I have a four foot stump height if I can help it. I use a chainsaw on exposed roots by using my BH, and ramming near the top of the stump with my PTB. Yeah it is easy to get frustrated if you plan to remove the stump in one 'sitting'. That's why I tackle it over several work periods. It will dig out a stump heavier than the BX will lift though.

It took me forever to remember to cut them off that high, and if they aren't too dang big, (or dead) I try to do it without cutting the crown off at all.

I try so hard to completely keep my chainsaw away from dirt of any kind that cutting any roots even exposed ones is very foreign to me.

I have a light, but very sharp mattock, as well as an old axe I found somewhere, that I use to cut roots, but the PTB also helps with that somewhat.

It really shines in pushing over trees though- it used to be completely impossible with the OEM bucket edge, and now PTB bites in and the purchase it gives gets the tree moving pretty well.
