I think PISTON started a GREAT thread here... The pics are awesome and the info/stories VERY helpful/entertaining...

I read Piston's original rules (no arguing about which grapple is better)...

I have a new KUBOTA L4701DT and I am trying to decide on the SIZE grapple... The tractor comes with a 72" bucket but I am not sure what size grapple is best (60"/66"/72")... I am leaning towards a 66" (with additional/removable) tines and double lid... You can prolly deduce that I am looking at the EA grapples but I am also looking at/negotiating with others... I will gladly take any OEM recommendations you want to pass along but please let's not argue about it...

I will be using this machine/equipment (taming the land) in New Hampshire/Maine/Tennessee/Florida...

I have a L3700 and have a "light duty" single lid Titan type grapple with a rock bucket base. It's 72" wide and I thought I needed one this wide at first. In reality, I could have gotten by with a 60" single lid just fine. IMO, get the smallest and lightest one you can use for your needs. A lighter bucket allows you to pick up more debris. And the hydr grapple power is more than effective enough to pick up whatever you can fit in it

I hear Ya... Thank YOU... I'm inclined to agree... Appreciate the forward-thinking/candor/truth/HELP... I have high expectations for ALL my implements... I simply cannot afford to make (too many) mistakes... MUCH obliged... I will post my results/pics...

[snip]

Apparently some of the grapple OEMs are VERY busy, almost to the point of over-stressing their resources, it seems... Evidently there is a run on these implements (perhaps due to the latest hurricanes/storms)...

This is probably right. But it could also be due to Piston's now-epic thread. :)

Went through the same thought process for my Kioti NX4510HST Cab (72" bucket). Finally decided on a 60" dual lid, rather than a 66" or 72". After a year of use, that's turned out to be the ideal size for me. Some of my work is in the woods, so the narrower width has been an advantage for nosing into tight places and grabbing stuff. Also requires less force to push into the earth, e.g., when cutting roots and trying to get under small stumps and trees. Just a couple more things to think about.

MUCH appreciate YOUR input/experience... Thank you... At least I am in the ball-park...

Maintain course/speed...

FTG and TOM,
What are your grapples called? It looks like it would work very well for firewood with those bottom tines the way they are. I originally had 9" spacing between my tines, but firewood would always fall through, so I welded some flatbar between most of the tines and have 4.5" spacing on center now, which is MUCH better, but still lose small pieces occasionally. I like your setups!

I found ANOTHER use for my grapple I never would have anticipated. I cut out a wall in my log home, and had about 24 pieces of 3'-4' sections of log wall to carry into the woods. The grapple made quick and easy work of it :D

I've had my grapple for about 5-6 years now if I remember correctly, and still to this day, every single time I use it I am impressed with how much easier it makes my life. :dance1: In fact, I'd say I use it more for chores I never thought I would use it for, than for moving brush/logs which was my original intent for the purchase.

Piston,

Mine is known as a 48″ Rock Bucket Grapple that I got from Skid Steer Attachment Depot in Huntsville, AL. It's made somewhere in NC, but not EA AFAIK.

The only things I don't like about mine is:

- Too hook it up, I have to loosen one of the FF connectors on the tractor

- The upper teeth don't come forward as much as I'd like.

Nice FTG! I like it!

Thanks!

And I finally noticed the difference (among others) between a root rake grapple vs. rock rake grapple:

Root rake: teeth meet at the front edge

Rock rake: teeth meet at some distance behind the front edge.

Never noticed that before.

I am looking for a narrow light grapple and came across this one

MTL 48" XL Root Grapple Hydraulic Brush Grapple Attachment - Fits all mini Bobcat skid steers MTL Attachments

$899 including shipping to freight terminal on EBAY and only 395lbs. Comparable in weight to the EA 54 inch single lid, but WAY, WAY less money. I have not been able to verify the opening dimension but it is likely better than EAs 37 inch. I will have to contact MTL for that info. Anyone have knowledge of MTL and their quality?

How are you going to attach it to your loader?

The attachment plate on a mini skid steer is only 23-3/4" wide:

Don't know the size of the Bobcat mini MT series:

Call them and they might just put a regular SSQA plate on it at no charge. Worth the call.

Well now I am wondering. This is the link from eBay I intended to post.

MTL attachments Quick attach skid steer-Tractor 48" HD-XL Root Grapple-Free Ship | eBay

In the eBay post it says Skid Steer XL full size reduced to 48 inches. Standard inside dimension is 45 inches. Maybe they are saying they reduced the regular grapple to 48 inches, not sure. Says universal quick attach plate. I think I will call like you say. Hard to think they would not make a standard SSQA model.

I want a narrow lightweight grapple and the EA model is good but expen$$$$ive.

Yep, that is a different grapple than your first link to the mini skid steer one:

The eBay link is for a SSQA:
