Grass Pit

Hi guys,

I recently started to build a grass pit for my tractor lawnmower. This picture will show why there is a need for it. Its difficult to pile the grass up unless the bag is taken off and some times my mam cuts the grass so she just tips it where ever she can. the result of this is as follows

This is the area in which the pit is going. the Idea is to dig a hole about 2m x 2m and about 1m deep. Some of the soil (and rock) dug up will be used to build a ramp at one side of the pit. this will increase the depth of the hole to around 2m. The lawnmover can then be backed up to the edge of the hole and the grass tipped into tht pit. thats the plan anyway.

I initially decided to do most of the digging by hand to reduce impact on the garden. The area is also enclosed by trees so itwas a bit of hassle getting a machine in

Digging was going ok until i hit shale after about a foot.

It was time to call the big boys in. took a JCB home from work and scratched my way down another 2 foot

Just out of curiosity, what is the purpose of a grass pit?

the next step was to concrete the base and put up a shutter for the head wall. we mixed the concrete using shovels which was torture. Once the concretewas set the shutter was set up

purpose is to tidy up the big pile of grass in the garden, make it easier to dump the grass from the mower. also once the grass is in the pit i a going to try and make good compost with it for the roses and veg. also its an excuse to use jcb's and practice my block building and shuttering. just finished college so had loads of energy to burn up after sitting on my rear end for 8 months
