did you bleed the air out???? if so, next step,pull the handle out and turn 1/4 turn. it should ingage a notch, now try to push it forward. try pumping it. to get the air is the key, just un screw it a little and try pumping it.

i found that the rubber ball looking part that is on the end of the spring, was catching on the cardboard tube and wouldn't go into the tube, thus no pressure on the grease...still haven't figured out a good solution, other than banging the head of the gun on a stump.

That's why I got a grease gun that mounts on a 5 gal. bucket. I hate those cartridges with a passion! The greas won't go bad and all I have to do is wheel it out and do my thing, no more empty grease gun or bad cardboard tubes.

This thread has been great. I have grease guns and pieces of grease guns all over the place and have tried most of the recommended fixes, but still get air locks on occasion. It seems to help a little to store the guns with the heads down, although over the winter I can't see the stuff flowing much.

So- does anyone have a recommendation for a brand or type of pneumatic cartridge gun? I've never used one and don't know if they also lose their prime, but at least the it's compressed air and not muscle power expended to try to get it to work. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I had a Lincoln pneumatic gun that I liked just fine. You could still occasionally have the air lock problem when you changed cartridges, but it usually didn't take me long to get the air out and then it wouldn't happen again until you changed cartridges again.

It gets even better when the temperature of the cartridge is well below the freezing point.

Then thereis always the pleasure of watching the whole head pop off as you are loosening it to release air and the spring empties the cartridge contents on the ground.

One way I have found is to Lock the plunger and apply pressure above and beyond that supplied by the spring while pumping the handle. This may work if its warm.

Hi Bird,

I have a Lincoln model 1160 air driven grease gun. It seems to work pretty well with one annoyance. Everytime I hit the trigger the gun will sit there and buzz for 5 seconds or so before it goes into it's pumping action. It gets to be a pain when you have to grease a bunch of fittings. Have you had this problem with your gun also? If I remember right, the gun calls for 90 psi on the compressor.

Jeff, I just realized that I made an error on the earlier post (memory's fading as I get older, I guess /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif). My pneumatic grease gun was a "Versital by Alemite" not a Lincoln. My last big manual gun was a Lincoln, I think.

Anyway, I've not seen one react as you say your Lincoln is doing, and I don't remember model numbers well enough, but isn't your gun one of those on which you can pull and hold the trigger and it keeps pumping until you release the trigger? We used those types in Dad's service stations when I was a teenager, but of course they were connected to a barrel of grease. The one I had that used the tubes of grease would only pump one stroke when you pulled the trigger. You had to release the trigger and pull again for the next stroke. I didn't like that quite as well, but since it would pump as fast as you could pull, release, pull, release, etc. I didn't have any complaints with it. I bought it at Tractor Supply Co.

Yes, it's one of the guns that will keep pumping until you release the trigger. It works quite well once you get past the buzzing at which point it makes a pop, pop, pop sound as it pumps out the grease. Never having used one before I wasn't sure if this was normal. I may try messing with the pressure to see if that changes anything one way or the other.
