One grease is considered incompatible to another grease when performance charateristics of the mixed grease falls below specifications.Generally speaking, greases of different chemical compositions should NOT be mixed. Mixing greases of different thickeners can form a mix that is to firm to provide sufficient lubrication or more common is that the mix is too soft to stay in place.

Combining greases of different oil bases can produce a fluid that will not provide a lasting lube film. Mixed grease can become diluted resulting in less heat resistance and have lower shear stability as the additives from one grease mix with additives from another grease. Purging the original grease, as best as one can is prudent.

DP, back in the day (the day I was buying grease, that is) you were all about the Moly 880 C&C for tractor use. Now...no mention of it. Has C&C 880 fallen out of favor? I hope not because I own a 6 gallon pail that will probably be here for another 10 years. I use it in everything from my tractor pivots to my mower deck and everything else around here. I hope it is ok for multipurpose use like that.

Nope, it hasn't fallen out of favor. In fact Moly 880 C&C is the grease I still recommend for tractors, especially if you have a FEL or BH. Quite a few people here on TBN use it. And your perfectly safe using it for everything you listed. The only application I would not use it in would be front disc brake wheel bearings. For that application I would recommend some of TRC's other greases with a higher dropping point (temperature).

If switching to a new grease, is there a way to flush old grease to be sure there are no compatibility issues. I have just bought a used JD and have no idea what has ebbn used.

Sorry to read TCS does not give specs on their premium truck and tractor grease. I have been using it for the last couple of years and seems to be fine.

My new Lincoln 14 volt grease gun shoots it like a champ. Read a bunch of posts about them and reviews. All give the Lincoln the thumbs up. Looked at Harbor Freight gun for about $60, and looked fine, but many complained they did not last. Got mine on net and got a 12v charger with it too.

The most common practice is to purge out old grease by pumping in new grease. Grease a little more frequently the first couple of times. The main problem you would have if there "was" a compatibility issue would be that the grease will usually thin out (lower in it's NGLI rating). It's rarely a end of the world situation. Just grease a little more frequently when you change greases and you should have the old grease purged out in no time.

great thread....

i went in to tractor supply and picked up a new gun the other day.....they had a cool little bracket that you can mount any where......

THEN, for the first time, I actually looked at all the different types of grease on the shelf.......holy crap! typcially, I look at the .98 a tube stuff and then buy the next one up or so....... not this time, I sprung for the "good" stuff....the 7.99 a tube "green grease".......

i wanted something "good" because this ole' flail mower, i'm sure, has some mega hours on it and I don't want to replace any of the expensive bearings any time soon........

so, am i paying too much for this "good" green grease?

If your happy with it then no, your not paying to much.

I use TRC grease and am very pleased with it, the grease is pricey but does a good job for my needs, If your willing to pay 7.99 a tube for the green grease, I would recommend you try it, only problem is you have to buy 50 tubes at a time or a 45 lb bucket, but it is very good stuff.

i think i'll use this up and find something with some moly in it....other than that, the green stuff seems to have some decent specs....

I've got two grease guns here, one is the small size variety, not sure of the brand, the other is a Plews normal size gun, I think the Plews can accept both tubes & bulk grease, the small gun I was using tubes in that, but it's getting harder to find small tubes of grease, so my question is how can I tell if a particular grease gun can be packed with bulk grease from a container versus using just tubes? Both of these guns have the little screw on the top which I believe is just an air purging valve.

Dieselpower,

I have a serious problem with my IH 4300 tow trucks wearing king pins out way too soon......like 9 mos or sooner. The repair shops keep telling me it's lack of grease but we've been pumping the dog outta them and even raising the front ends to relieve pressure to try to get it greased better. I've been using Mystic JT-6 as I mentioned to you a long time ago and i'm beginning to think it's my grease. Maybe as you've indicated it's the extreme pressure that these king pins are under and I need a better grease. Any new leads on where to purchase less than 50 tubes of what you have recommended??? What's your opinion on this king pin problem....it's expensive!!!!!!
