I just bought an MTD 31 ton splitter from Amazon.com of all places. 1299, free shipping, and they took 25 bucks off!!

Here is the link... Splitter

Amazon began selling a wide variety of items through 'partners' several years ago.

That's the same splitter that I have, only mine is 6.5 HP and therefor 26 ton.

How did the splitter ship? ie truck freight?? and how much assembly was required? Looks like an interesting deal.

I didn't receive it yet. They said it would be 2-3 weeks. It will come by semi truck. The person at Amazon said that they will unload it too!

Not sure about assembly, I'll report when i get it..

I would check your local big box home store.... I know that Home Depot sells the same splitter and a lower powered one. I don't remember the prices but it was in the same ballpark. I've never been to a Lowe's, but I imagine they sell a similar splitter.

Be careful of the Box stores. My FIL was trying to buy a splitter and purchased one from Wal Mart. After taking the first one home and not being able to start it, he traded it for the other one on the lot after the manager couldn't start it either. He started it there and it ran fine. Well, something else was wrong with this one and it wouldn't split anything.

There are not many places to buy stuff in his area, and he ended up driving an hour to a true equipment dealer and getting a splitter. He paid a bit more than he wanted to, but he also ended up getting a bigger splitter. I used it this weekend to split a bunch of Red Oak, Maple and it worked well. Some of the pieces were close to 35" in diameter.

I too have this splitter's little brother; 26 ton with 6.5hp. When I bought it at Home Depot, I wouldn't take their "display" model which had sat outside for months and looked awful. They loaded a brand new one still in the crate in my truck and off I went. Setup takes about 1/2 hour. It comes with oil to put in the engine, but you will have to get about 12 quarts of transmission fluid or hydro fluid for it. Once I added the oil, hydro fluid, and gas; two pulls on the starter later I was in business. Oh, I do think I had to bolt on a couple of side pieces to keep the logs from rolling off of the ram. Still no big deal, and the splitter has worked just fine! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

As a follow-up...I received the splitter this Friday. It came unassembled, which is actually a good thing since I had to load it into the back of my Tahoe to bring it to where the wood was anyway /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif. If it was assembled I wouldnt have been able to fit it in. Anyway, it took about an hour to assemble and fill. Took 7 gallons of fluid, which actually took a good while to do. The directions are a bit non-descript, but looking forward in the assembly process helped resolve any issues. The system required you to bleed it before use, which was very simple since it was self bleeding. Simply lowering as raising the ram a dozen times did the trick. After topping her up with more fluid, I towed her over to my pile of logs. The first one I split was easily over two feet. She moaned for a second or two, but the log gave in and split very nicely. After that it was cake....

I am very pleased so far, though I only split for about an hour. I have much more time next week to put her through the paces. Sure beats a sledgehammer and a wedge!!

Why didn't you guys buy a 3pt splitter that will run off the tractor?
I am going to build one and figure it would be much cheaper than having another motor and pump to take care of.
