grinding noise while turning

The clunking still happens when the diff is on during turns - is that normal? Thank you again.

Yes turning with diff lock engaged defeats the purpose of pinion gears/shafts in diff.

I seldom use differential lock on my equipment except for rare occasions. Needing it indicates that it is too wet and I should wait for the ground to dry out more or that I am over working the tractor with too high of a draft load. It is helpful for small slick spots on occasions though. If you lock up the rear wheels you should expect to go straight only.

I have been using it quite a bit while chisel plowing. I hope I had not messed anything up?
The tractor has 140hp and the chisel plow has only 11 shanks, I thought it should pull it without too much trouble.
Perhaps the tires are too worn? How do I measure the wear of rear tractor tires - can't find a method anywhere online.

I've utilized the diff lock when plowing many acres with my 4255 with no known ill affects BUT I always disengage DL when turning. IMHO there's not a lot of difference in traction on worn vs new tires. Some tractor pullers prefer worn tires. Look at the new style short cleat tires built specifically for tractor pulling.
