Had the same problem. Tried filling in his burrows with rocks but he just dug new ones, finally filled one tunnel with concrete then picked him off with the .22 as he returned from his evening feeding.

Ground hogs are sight and sound only critters. They don't work off smell. I have had them come out of their holes within two feet of me as long as I didn't move or make a noise.

It takes a fair sized dog to take on a full grown ground hog. I have seen some beagle hounds thoroughly shredded by a ground hog. A cornered ground hog is pretty scrappy.
It depends on the breed. A Terrier or a Jack Russel will do the job. What about dogs used by "Coon Hunters"? A raccoon is more capable of inflicting injury on a dog than a groundhog. Even a "Possum" can be dangerous. Many dogs that possess "tenacity" can subdue a groundhog. A groundhog's weak spot is its head. A good dog will grab the head and crush it. We use to Coon hunt a lot. When the dog didn't tree a Coon, or the feisty Coons would swim the river, thus getting away, we would go Possum hunting. This is how we did it. One would climb the tree, carrying a burlap sack, while another shined the light on the critter, from the ground. The trick is to grab the tail without the possum's teeth or claws reaching you. A good dog, most definitely, is capable of killing a Groundhog. The size of the dog is not important. The tenacity and temperament of the breed are the main contributing factors. Rest assured that I wouldn't use a dog on a Wolverine or a Badger.

A groundhog will lie on its back and just flail those long digging nails. Can be tough on a dog.

I had a ground hog under my lake cabin many years ago. I slipped a trap in it's entry hole....which burrowed under the foundation......and caught him / her by the belly (long time ago...but I belive it was a female). It was dead when I checked my trap....and I never had another problem.

You can prove the dog out on the ground hog or prove the ground hog out with the dog. No bets taken there. We have had about 20 big dogs in our lifetime. Only one that could kill ground hogs on a regular basis.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwRsx6RRb5M]Dog Fights Groundhog - YouTube[/ame] Go the video about the pet named Kirby. I have seen One Pitbull take and kill a large wild hog in Florida. This Pitbull belonged to John, a friend of mine, and we were hunting on Palmer Ranch.

pretty much all the dogs I've had enjoyed ground hog hunting mine didnt get any last year as I think he wiped out the local population the year prior as he got 5 or 6 of them. last year all he got were opossum 2 or 3 babies and the momma, whom I got him off of prior to him getting all stinky as opossum wreak :p I just hope this year is not SKUNKS :x

CONABEAR 220 is a good choice if there under the garage I have same issue and use one on them have taken probably 15 out of the back garage using it and 2 opossums too man the one I almost tossed the trap into the weeds

I like the .22 (Rugar 10-22) works well for my needs and even my 1200FPS pellet gun has taken 2 out last year.
