Wow a compound bow fired arrow can really ricochet off frozen ground never know where that might end up!

I do like archery though...silent and deadly :D

I reiterate to gas bomb them in the hole. Usually they have an second entrance you need to make sure any escape route is blocked too.

Grew up with a huge groundhog population on the farm. Some of the holes could break a tractor axle and we hated 'em. My brother, father and I - and our dogs - would take out over 100 every year, but there were always plenty. We hunted them for sport sometimes. Sometimes just shot them to reduce the population. Discovered groundhogs have almost no depth perception and cannot see motion directly toward them. They also seem to consistently ignore things white. We stretched a white sheet over a hoop about 5 feet in diameter, cut a two inch hole in the middle, held it in front of us walking directly toward a groundhog colony. We routinely got within 15 feet of the animals without spooking them, then shot them with a 22 target pistol through the hole.

Funny thing, even if you spooked them or shot one, if you stood still, others would come up in a few minutes to check out the problem - and you could shoot them too.

Sometimes, though, if you flat didn't have time, we'd just get the gas bombs sold by the co-op here and chuck them down the holes. Always worked. Just not as much fun.

this is interesting, and funny to picture. i've noticed similar - often they run when they see us or the pup, but if they don't run immediately i find that i can walk right toward them and they remain still.

yup, if they get spooked into their dens they don't seem to be able to help their curiosity and will nearly always come up for a look.
