That was probably his problem! He was hugging that tree! The poor abused beaver was just looking for a good meal, and got ahold of the wrong kinda limb. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

How strange you should mention raising taxes. My property consists of three Texas Veterans Land Board tracts which are 11 acres each, side-by-side for 33 total acres in Wise County, Tx. One of my tracts was valued at $20,400 last year and this year they went up to $31,260./w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif This is totally unimproved land on a gravel county road about one mile from a 4-lane state highway. It doesn't even have any stock fences (although it will shortly so I can get ag use). The only thing I have done is to clear some underbrush and I keep it mowed after the wildflower season is over. I know there is no "love lost" between you and government bureaucracy. Me either./w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif Several of my neighbors have the same treatment. Oh, by the way. They only did this on that single tract. My other tracts had the taxes raised about 4 to 5 percent. Go figure?!

Tell you wife I would love her beaver tail recipe, but I no longer have beavers. Honest, my neighbors and I "declared war" and I think everyone of them is gone (the beavers, not the neighbors/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif). I've seen no indication of them in the last month. ...but, just in case, she might keep it handy./w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

We had a story in the local paper a few years ago about a fella out shooting beavers (I guess he wasn't patient enough to trap them). Seems that a high velocity rifle bullet ricochets beatifully off the surface of water.

Nobody hurt, but I seem to remember that some guy living across the dam and up the hill a little had a few ventilation holes in the side of his house to complain about!!

Funny stuff water - the right angle and a bullet stops in just a foot or so. The wrong angle and it ricochets.

It doesn't have to be high velocity. When I was about 13, a friend (age 14) was shooting turtles (with a 22 cal) in his grandfather's pond and I was working in a field several hundred yards away. I was behind my tractor adjusting cultivator sweeps when I heard a bullet coming and SMACK! It hit me right in the butt! I must have jumped around quite a bit because it really did sting, but when I pulled my pants down, all I had on my butt was a big red spot about the size of a 50 cent piece. The bullet never penetrated the skin. Now, if it had hit me in the head or face, I'm sure my injury would have been more severe. I learned my lesson. I never shoot into a pond unless there is a bank or some suitable backstop like heavy woods. I have a small 20 acre soil conservation lake that I share with 4 neighbors. My rule is never, never, never shoot into the open water of that lake. I know I'm probably paranoid, but I'm safe too.

JimI,

it never penetrated the skin .

Does that qualify you as a hard ### or hide like a rhinocerous? /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif Man of steel? Or, pocket full of wrenches? (Man, my wife hates those going through the laundry. But I've got the cleanest tools in town!)

Seriously, our tax situation is a little different here. If you change stuff, of course, they can tax you what they want to. Otherwise, the taxable value is frozen at what you paid for the property and is adjusted ANNUALLY based on a formula using cost of living, etc. So, ours go up a little bit every year. This small increment, however, doesn't keep up with Market Value. Which, of course, changes with the new owner, who REALLY gets socked. /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif.

I've always heard that you're supposed to use Hollow Points when shooting at the water. (If I should ever be attacked by water, I want to be prepared to defend myself.) /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

In the spirit of "True Confessions," I was a fat little kid with a big butt./w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif I guess he had an easy target./w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif And truth being stranger than fiction, the bullet never even penetrated my jeans. It hit on my back pocket near the seam of my "bulletproof" pants. I just got a terrific swat. I never found the bullet actually. While I was dancing around, screaming that I had been shot, I must have stepped on it and buried it for eternity. My guess is that it was flattened by the water before the ricochet and also slowed considerably. I still remember exactly how it felt, but I also get a smile on my face thinking of what a spectacle I must have been. And by the way, I went over to my friend and told him if he didn't stop shooting, I was going to throw him and his gun into the pond./w3tcompact/icons/mad.gif To this day though, I don't think I've ever really convinced him that he shot me. /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

I'll take your tax structure!/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif The problem here in this county is that they are building a new school and we have these "independent school districts" which raise the county taxes to pay for the schools. If there is very little industry, the property owners take a beating./w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

Well, we have certainly covered all the details about water-borne groundhogs and woodchucks./w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Thats the best story I've heard in a long time /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif. I'm gonna be thinking about that one and laughing forever!

You know what they say: The smart things you do are forgotten immediately. The other stuff they'll talk about for the next 99 years.

Our school taxes are handled a little bit differently too. We have what is called a "Homestead Exemption" which limits the amount of school taxes that can be levied against your primary homestead. For this exemption we traded our original 4% sales tax for 6% with the additional 2% going to the schools.

I think were almost ready to start another thread we're so far off the original discussion. Like all good conversations, this one has drifted.

So, best way to shoot a groundhog? I vote for .223 hollow point. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

This little guy obviously didn't learn anything in Tree Cutting 101.

3rdBase,

When we moved to our place (5 acres) we had a couple of Woodchucks in residence in the yard. Once the Woodchucks realized we had 5 Springer Spanials they decided it was not worth the hassle & moved elsewhere. I did not have to fire a shot.
