Gun Holder Ideas wanted

I tried the rifle thing for many years and never found a satisfactory solution. Plus the rifle got the snot beat out of it. The closest i got was a full leather scabbard with a boot over the top.
What finally worked for me was a 9mm semi-auto with a flap-type holster I had made by El Paso Saddlery. It worked great and I carried that pistol for more than 10 years and it still looks pretty good. I had a clip put on the back of the holster rather than a belt loop so I could take it off or put it on quickly. If I wanted, it went wher I did. If I went into town I just pulled it off the belt and stashed it till I got back. Yes, unloaded.
Rabid coyotes was my concern.

I've been looking for an aftermarket marine-grade "Glovebox" that will fit between the loader uprights and the hood. I was thinking I'd find something in the boat supply catalogs but nothing yet. Any toughts, guys?
I want to stick my scoped Ruger .22 mag revolver in there. In Vermont anyone can have a handgun loaded on their person (concealed or otherwise) or loaded in a vehicle but if you've got a loaded longun in the vehicle, you're in violation of F&G Laws. Everytime I turn the corner, there's a **** woodchuck and I'm unarmed. Tick me off. Oh, and then there's the occasional "Hail Mary" at coyotes ;-)

For handguns, I just found a canvas vest that has a large zippered pocket (made by CAT), probably for a clipboard, or something. I can put all my 4" barreled handguns in there, completely covered, and yet it is very readily availbable. It has been great, both on my neighbor's tractor, and out snowshoeing. I carry either my 9mm, or my .357 mag. We have Coyotes, and they have been active lately. I like those tractor mounted scabbard ideas, and I will do something like that when I get my next tractor.

I looked at all kinds of gun racks. I felt this one was the sturdiest one made and the most flexible for my needs on the back of my gator. The steel is very thick. It is designed to be used with Kolpins IV series hard gun cases or almost any other brand hard case with maybe a hole drilled. About $55 at many places on the web.

This 2 piece design could be mounted on a tractor in various places, Rops, FEL arms, hood, fender, etc.

mount it above your head under the canopy. some velcro and foam is all you need. you can put the gun in a gun sock for dust and water protection. very handy loacation too.

Be careful with state laws though, if the DNR (or whoever handles such issues in your state) happens to see you shooting at things from a vehicle (or tractor), they could raise a big stink about it. .
on what grounds.?

1*David is right about not shooting from the tractor either.
Try to jump off and grab it then make the shot, clear of the road and tractor.
2*Avoid any such activity if in sight of public roads or even neighbors.
3*Remember too that Game Wardens can come on your property uninvited.
4*I also have a valid hunting license.
1*why what's wrong with that?
2*What's illlegal about that?
3*
4*You should not have to have a license on your own property.

If someone asks why we like to shoot coyotes, all I can say is "because they're coyotes." If that doesn't answer their question, then there's no point trying to explain it.

LBrown59 -

Discharging a firearm from any type of vehicle (tractor, ATV, Pickup, etc.) is illegal in many states. This may be covered by the DNR and/or the state statutes. Not to mention (if it does happen to be legal in your state) it's not the safest practice.

Additionally, many states have laws reagrding the distance from roadways and buildings that it is legal to discharge a firearm. Again, this is driven with safety in mind.

Having a license to take game has absolutely nothing to do with whether you are on your own property or not - I suggest you read up on your state's DNR regulations. However, this thread is about shooting coyotes which may or may not be regulated via licenses in a given state. In any case, being on your own property does not exclude a person from obtaining a valid license if applicable.

Good luck -

Scott
