You don't need a license to hunt on your property in Mississippi. If you own it, you can hunt on it free of charge.

That's correct, but you have to own it (ie. If your wife or kids (16+) aren't on the deed, they can't hunt for free.)

In West Virginia, you don't have to have a license to hunt on your own land either. Interesting article about that exact thing today on the only news that matters, the Hur Herald!

1*The land owner already does that simply by providing the land.
Where do you think the game comes from?
Require a license off your property but forget it on your own land.
Where do you think the DNR would be if you took the land owner out of the picture? ? ?

Yes, having and maintaining a habitat for wildlife is very important and the landowner is a vital piece of that. Remember, the DNR is about much more than hunting - there is fishing, state parks, enforcement, grants and funding for wildlife and habitat restoration, etc. Your license fees pay for part of this.

As far as where the game comes from...most landowners that I know do not participate in any type of "breeding" or "re-stocking" program. In MN they are funded by the DNR and/or private clubs (like local chapters of Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, Wild Turkey Federation, etc.)

In the end I don't see the $20 I spend on a small game license or the $25 I spend on a deer license or the $25 I spend on a fishing license for my family as an issue - at all. This was the same when I was growing up on our farm - and yes, we hunted pheasants on it all the time.

This is where we disagree - you have a different view on licensing.

Good luck.

It wouldn't be too suprising if some state agency didn't reintroduce coyotes to an area if the local landowners managed to get rid of them.

*We had a realtor here that had this slogan under all is the land.
Without the land owner i.e. the land there would be no hunting fishing or other such recreation.
**I don't either as long as you don't charge it for on my own land.
I think where you and I differ on this point is you see it as a sports/hunting issue while i view it as a property rights issue.

Some states consider the wildlife in the state to be one of the state's natural resources, and the taking of that resource requires a license. Other states, it may be different. That's an issue you need to personally look into in order to make sure you don't run afoul of the law. If you don't like the law, push to change it, since that's the only way it even has a chance to change.

I think I have changed my mind on the hard case, and am going to consider a soft case with a flap or zipper that seals halfway decent to mount on the tractor for my .30-30 just in case. Either that or I'll just continue to carry my sidearm as normal.

If you read your state's hunting regulations, it should state whether or not you need a hunting license to take game on public and private land. It should also give you all the definitions and restrictions that apply. Have a beef with the laws? Take it up with the DFG and your legislature.

As far as the gun scabbard, it depends what you want. If it is for quick and easy access, a scabbard or pistol holster is the key. For transportation and keeping it safe and dust free, a case is what you want. I like to have mine so I can get it right now. Here is a pic of my wife on the ATV. There is a holstered .357 mag on the wooden box for easy access.

With the exception of Louisana, most state laws seem to have been copied from England. I think the original premise was that the king owned all the animals and just because they ended up on some other guy's land, they still belonged to the king. Our more modern translation of that is that the wildlife is a natural resource of the state and comes under state regulation for its protection. But the conflict between "this is my land and the animal is on my land" and government regulation has been going on for hundreds of years and will probably continue to go on.

So instead of having a relatively simple question of how to carry a firearm safely without damaging it, there are all these other questions about distance from the road, permits, etc. that come up.

Land owners should not have to put up with such nonsense.
Heckling landowners is sorta like biting the hand that feeds you.
Boy do I agree with everything you've posted. I've always carried, car, truck, boat, 4 wheelers, and tractors. When I wanta take a shot at a coyote on my own property, I do! We have big cats here and I very seldom go to the woods without a .357 strapped on. For long guns on the tractor I leave the case on and bungee strap it to the rops.

As far as licensing a land owner who's going to have time to get a permit when confronted or threatened by one of those big cats?
