In Mass. I think I would be better of with a baseball bat scabbard. The coyote would have to wait till I got my gun out of my locked case and took the trigger lock off, if I was carrying it in/on a vehicle (ie tractor). For hunting shotguns are ok, rifles and pistols nothing bigger than .22's. I'll just stash my .444 behind that tree oh and more than 500 ft from the house.

1*Additionally, many states have laws reagrding the distance from roadways and buildings that it is legal to discharge a firearm. Again, this is driven with safety in mind.
2*Having a license to take game has absolutely nothing to do with whether you are on your own property or not
3*In any case, being on your own property does not exclude a person from obtaining a valid license if applicable.

1*What is meant by distance /how is that defined?
2&3* I still contend that a property owner should be exempt from this.

You don't need a license to hunt on your property in Mississippi. If you own it, you can hunt on it free of charge.

500 feet from the centerline of any road and 500 feet from any building (occupied or not) here in MN.

As far as licensure to hunt your own property - we'll have to disagree. I fully support the DNR and their programs and have absolutely no problem forking over the pittance that a license costs to hunt small game or deer. These funds are used to support and improve the environment as well as employ the DNR resources.

Side note - our local Ducks Unlimited chapter was one of many that raised funds to purchase the Bell Helicopter that is being used in Louisiana and Mississippi to help nab poachers (gross overlimit of waterfowl). This was about 7 or 8 years ago and the program has been quite successful from what I have heard.

1*The land owner already does that simply by providing the land.
Where do you think the game comes from?
Require a license off your property but forget it on your own land.
Where do you think the DNR would be if you took the land owner out of the picture? ? ?

I didn't realize how restrictive the rules for hunting on one's own property were until I read them.

I used to live in a city where shooting in the city limits was absolutely forbidden. Fireworks were banned. Of course, all those gunshots I heard must have been the neighbor's TV or my imagination.

Land owners should not have to put up with such nonsense.
Heckling landowners is sorta like biting the hand that feeds you.

The nonsense that really bugs me is I was paying about $1,900 a year in property taxes on a house in the city I ending up selling for about $200,000.
