Gun racks in the back window of the pickup

In HS, it was common to see gun racks with guns in them. Now, it's not just an expulsion, but would get you arrested. Times do change fast. Never would have thought about school shootings and such. People got in fist fights, but never once in my area did anyone go get their gun.

Different thought processes today. In some ways, we're probably better off today, but in some ways, we're also worse off.

I graduated 24 years ago now. Wonder what things will be like in another 24 years.

All the history books will have the pictures and mentions of guns removed. :(

Guns have increased in value since back in the day. They cost too much to have displayed giving thieves an excuse to smash a window. And in these parts there are a lot of immigrants who come from countries where gun ownership is highly restricted which adds to the pool of would-be thieves. I remember my first shotgun was a break-open, 20ga Mossberg for $39 at Kmart. My Glenfield .22 bolt (which I still have) was about that same price.

We don't have those law problems here, but still, I would not carry a visible gun in a vehicle nowadays. In the old days we all did it because the likelihood of theft was much less. I guess we just didn't have as many crackheads in the community when I was a boy. We keep our guns under our clothing now.

yup, inviting a breakin...

Too easily/likely to be stolen.
Popularity of double and extended cabs makes a rack impractical.
Use to be the only legal way to carry in many states.
Changing attitude about guns.
No one wants a long gun smacking them in the back of the head in an accident.

My mom took me to K-Mart in 8th grade to buy my first .22 - A Marlin, bolt action with an 8 round magazine. I think it was something like $28 (in 1975). I still have that gun and was even able to buy new magazines for it recently.

I don't have one in my truck, but I so have one on my RTV- it took a lot of searching. I found one for sale on Amazon. It may be the most used accessory I have on it- I am always hanging a face shield, jacket, or a tool on it-even a gun during hunting season! Will

I got a gun rack in my truck. Sort of. Kind of the modern CCW version.

Hunting from a roadway.
Hunting from a vehicle.
Driving with a loaded hunting weapon.

Well, anyway, that's some of the stuff you'd get here for that unless its private property.

As others have mentioned, you probably don't see it much anymore because:
A. Every time you went somewhere, someone would call the cops on you.
B. If it's visible, it's community property (someone will steal it).
C. It's probably not legal in a bunch of places anymore.

Personally, I'd be most concerned about theft and getting hassled by the other motorists.

In the early '70s, I put one of those gun racks in my standard cab 1969 Chevy. Never put a gun in it, but it made a nice hat rack and place to put an umbrella.
