22 year active duty retired U.S. Marine. Nuff said 'bout that. My passion is anything Bobcat, destructive by nature, or rolling with a HUGE set of hi-beams - the bigger the better there, me boyos! =)

I'm not at all politically correct, so if you offend easily, back off of my posts as I am what I am. If you are a troll, my best piece of advice is don't come at me with wit. You'll soon find that in a battle of wit with me, you are dangerously unarmed. Down home, down to earth, red neck, country boy who speaks plain, says what he means, means what he says, and has skin tougher than any rhinoceros ever did.

Your best friend or worst enemy - your choice. I'm highly opinionated, extremely politcal, and believe in God, yes, THE one and only with the capital G. Well that's my new member intro. I'm also some kind of smart arsed comedian. If I can't get a smirk out of you, you don't have a pulse.

Thanks for reading and how do you do? I'm doing so good that there really needs to be two of me to properly enjoy it! =)

Yes, the Marines are a department of the Navy...
The MEN's Department!!! =)

Welcome aboard Gunny,

I am enjoying this thread. I am retired Navy myself. However I currently have one son in the Army and one that was in the Marine Corps. Interesting times at our house, so to make it easier one time when they were both home on leave I sat them down for a little chat. Told them I really did not want to put up with any interservice rivalry between them.

I reminded them that during World War 2, the Marines mainly fought in the Pacific and the Army mainly fought in Europe. (I know there are always exceptions) but ...... when you can fight on both fronts like the Navy then you can brag!!!

EM1 (SS) Retired

There are only two types of ships in the Navy.... SUBMARINES and targets!

As you clearly stated your dislike or disdain for the normal inter-service rivalry, I will refrain (no matter how DiFFiCuLt) from spewing any further. Caveat: at least during this ONE response! LOL! Gosh but how I have so many, especially when it comes subs and bubble heads! Gunny
Marines prefer to be completely surrounded, or heloed into hotspots, so that we may fight in ALL directions!!!

I don't mind the rivalry, just wanted to knock them down a peg or two. Come on I'm a submariner, can't get to me. I can give as well as get.

So I am looking forward to hearing from a sea going bell hop!

SUB-Marine = less of a Marine! Submarine duty: 40 men "go down", 20 couples come up!!! Bahahaha!
They "give as well as get" - TOO EASY, here in the 1stCivDiv, that is referred to as the San Francisco version of "catching" and "receiving"! Oh, God, just snorted out Rum & Coke with lime juice all over my cellphone!

Not exactly. I think Merrills Marauders, the 6th Ranger Battalion, and others would take exception.

But the submarine service in WWII had a remarkable record, especially once they fixed the torpedoes, a very interesting story in itself.

My father was on an Essex class carrier. When a submarine recovered an aviator, they had to transfer them first to a Destroyer, then to the carrier. The standard "Bounty" was 10 gallons of ice cream: five for the destroyer crew and five for the sub.

You can find the video on YouTube of a submarine crew rescuing future President George H W Bush.

Man, and here I was awaiting your best "Jarhead" jibe... :confused3:
In the Marines, bounty would've been measured in booze, brauds, or cigs at least! Pappy Boyington (Colonel, USMC) of TV sitcom Baa Baa Black Sheep fame (in addition to WWII Medal of honor and Navy Cross fame) , and his command/wing of F4U Corsairs, never did anything in return for ice cream! Must be why the USN still maintains their "Good Humor Man" dress white duds...

Interesting you have Garands given the Marine Corps history with that gun.

The Army selected the Garand as their service arm in 1937. Relatively small quantities were made, and the Navy and Marine Corps refused to contribute a dime.

In late 1940 the Marine Corps conducted a service rifle evaluation. The committee of officers officially selected the M1903 Springfield. The ARmory system dutifully set up production of the Springfield in addition to the Garand and M1 CaRbine. It was rumored that one of the board members by the name of Edson privately but strongly Disagreed with the decision. Edsons Raider Bn used Garands.

When Army units hit QuadcanL, Marine Grunts started writing home asking why the Marines didn't have them as well. Their brass eventually asked for Garands in lieu of the Springfields they'd demanded less than two years prior. They then complained throughout the war that they were given short shrift on production. We won the war, anyway....

I have nothing against Marines, in fact here are a few quotes that I completely enjoy.

"Retreat, ****. We just got here."
- WWI Marine Captain Lloyd Williams of the 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines, in reply to the retreating French forces bleeting that he should turn back.

"Come on, you sons of bitches-do you want to live forever?"
- Gunnery Sergeant Daniel Daly, USMC, Belleau Wood, June 1918

"We're surrounded? Good, now we can kill the bastards in any direction!"
- Colonel Lewis B. "Chesty" Puller; Battle of Chosen Reservior, Korea
