Re: Guns! - I promised (yes it\'s rural related..)

ALL on this forum . . . sorry if my last 2 posts sounded like a rant. I just re-read them and I don't mean to offend.

Ballistics are often misunderstood, people often believe what they hear, which is not often the truth.

Also, the racking sound of a 12 gauge in the dark is a very scary sound to any rational person. . . ditto the sound of cocking the slide of any semi-auto handgun. . . but who says the intruder is rational?

Henro . . . to specifically address your statistics, they are wrong. Or I should qualify that, they are WRONG.

There is some factual information about gun ownership available and there is the stuff that the press regurgitates from the anti-gun crowd that has been discredited so many times that it is a shame people still beleive the lies. But if a lie is repeated often enough people believe it.

And, there is some truth to some of the statistics so to help clear up some of the junk out there. . .

A gun in the house INCREASES your safety IF the house does NOT include drug abusers, alcoholics, people with a history of mental disorders, spouse beaters, gang members or criminals.

So, not knowing personally anyone on this board, I suggest you look at your own home. If you are a drug abuser, criminal, or any of the other malcontents and ner'do'ells I've listed above, then you might just end up dead or might just end up killing a family member with your own gun.

However, when the statistics take out the riff-raff, then the odds of using the gun to SAVE your life, the life of a family member or the life of a neighbor outweigh the risks by a huge margin.

Re: Guns! - I promised (yes it\'s rural related..)

MY LAST POST ON THE TOPIC . . .

The number of physicians in the US is 700,000.

b. Accidental deaths caused by Physicians per year is 120,000.

c. Accidental deaths per physician is 0.171. (US Dept. of Health & Human Services)

Then think about this:

a. The number of gun owners in the US is 80,000,000.

b. The number of accidental gun deaths per year (all age groups) is 1,500.

c. The number of accidental deaths per gun owner is .000018.

Statistically, doctors are approximately 9,000 times more dangerous than gun owners.

FACT: NOT EVERYONE HAS A GUN, BUT ALMOST EVERYONE
HAS AT LEAST ONE DOCTOR

Please alert your friends to this alarming threat. We must ban doctors before this gets out of hand. As a public health measure, I have withheld the statistics on lawyers for fear that the shock could cause people to seek medical attention... /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Rogue; have you considered the use of some of the spray deterents that can incapicate an intruder.

I wouldn't bother - 1st they aren't as effective as you might think, you have to be really close to get a good burst in and then you also stand the chance of residual effects getting you. They also aren't meant to be used against armed people which you MIGHT be going up against. (Don't bring a knife to a gunfight!!). Non lethals have there uses but defending your home isn't one of them. Someone is in your house take them out as quick and certainly as possible. Most people don't realize that even someone with a knife is considered in lethal range if within 20 feet of you and you have a gun. Why? Because even getting shot lethally won't stop/drop someone immidiately all the time and 1 second is all that's needed to close the distance and get a shot in before expiring. For that reason I have a pump shotgun for the home. A lot easier to point and shoot in low/no light situations and you're a lot more likley to stop the aggressor immidiately, not so much with a handgun. Guess my thought is if the intruder has a handgum himself I want something bigger! I use 00 buck but # 4 shot would work equally as well for inside

TresCrows,
As long as we're considering alternatives to the venerable .45 ACP, why stop at the .40 Shorter & Weaker when the 10mm is alive and doing well? The Glock 29 is my carry-around-the-farm choice: the pistol is compact, accurate, and reliable; the round is a good tradeoff between velocity, weight, and cross-section. Gotta love a 180gr JHP at leaving the muzzle at 1200fps and packing 576 ft-lbs of energy.

Re: Guns! - I promised (yes it\'s rural related..)

Maybe before you purchase the gun.. you might update the security on your home. New motion sensor spot lights.. better locks. Maybe even think of getting a dog if you don't have one.. a dog will let you know about a strange noise before you would even hear it. Once that is covered.. then a nice defense weapon is a plus. As far as .45's.. I have the Colt Gold Cup in stainless.. it is a sweet shooter.. and w/ the added full length.. double springed guide rod w/ plutonium pellots.. the recoil is softened considerably. Though you might want to consider something that the wife is comfortable shooting too.. (a .45 could be too much for a small woman) and together go to the range to get comfortable w/ it.

Re: Guns! - I promised (yes it\'s rural related..)

Buy a "Kimber .45" or a "Sig Sauer". A little pricey, but you get what you pay for.

Another option is a Single action/double action revolver in .357 or .44 special. Taurus makes some nice .357's and Rossi has a nice .44 special. The nice thing about a SA/DA revolver is the ease of operation. If a cartridge fails to fire, you simply pull the trigger again. They're easy to check for safety and confirm they're unloaded.

Re: Guns! - I promised (yes it\'s rural related..)

I live in Canada so this thread is a little ridiculous for me but if I had to chose it would be a shot gun.

The fellow talked about stopping someone? Well, #8or 9 shot, open choke at the ranges you would see in your house would literally knock someone over I sure! I've never shot anyone but from shooting inanimate objects, there is a pile of energy released.

For those shooting in your house with buckshot, you are nuts if anyone lives in the house with you! Open choke, 20 ft away with #9 shot (light loads too) won't go through a sheet of 3/4" plywood. Buckshot, well, I can't think of anything in my house that would slow it down! I'd be worried about my neighbours too!

I suppose if you are a good shot with a handgun it would work but use some of those shot shell loads they are talking about! BTW they make 22 calibre shotshells too. At 30 ft, they'll stick a squirels brains to the tree. Of course it would just piss off a crackhead.

Re: Guns! - I promised (yes it\'s rural related..)

Why would you use 00 buck in a shotgun inside a house for protection?

Why do people sell their guns when the have a child? You could buy another safe. My fondest growing up memories are with my dad and brother and cousins out shooting an learning to be riflemen. Strange none of us attacked a school or sniped innocents buying gasoline. Teach a kid about guns and fairplay and he will grow up well. J

Finally something we agree on!! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
