I know there is a handgun out that is a double barrel and shoots either 410 or .45 Colt. It is a break open for loading, stamped metal and about $90.00 as best I can remember. I got one to carry in the camper since shooting 410s will not pierce the skin of the camper. I know about 10 years ago they were the defensive weapon of choice for apartment dwellers. Sorry but I can not recall the manufactors name.

I totally agree with Hakim about the concept of practice and training with firearms.

Regarding recoil, I would also like to point out that my wife, a former beauty queen, is also ROTC trained, a former trap shooter, and knows guns pretty darn well. She easily handles the 45acp and the 12 guages we have in the house, although being 5'7" she does not handle the recoil as well as I do at 6' and 185lbs. And when I say that she cannot handle recoil as well, it is from the stamina standpoint. She can easily handle 20, 30 or even 50 rounds, but she tires out and starts missing a lot more as she get up around 100 rounds on a string.

I would also like to point out that there is SO MUCH other stuff to do before getting the gun. And I listed several things like creating a safe room in your house and getting a good alarm system. I am sure there is a lot more to consider as well.

I am in favor of gun ownership. As long as it is responsible. And some of that is preparing the rest of the house first. And preparing the family as well.

Bob, what do you think of the Springfield Armory XD? The 3" subcompact is only available in 9x19, but the 4" is available in 9mm, 40 S&W as well as 357 Sig.

Also going to take a look at the S&W 99.

Mo passed a CCW law but a St. Louis judge issued a restraining order. It goes to State Supreme Court in January.

GaryM, I looked at both and like both. I pretty much like small guns that shoot big bullets. There is a lot of exciting technology in the gun industry with the use of not only polymers but also metalugical advancements as well. The XD is sort of wierd looking, but appears solid and while I haven't shot one (yet) the rumors are it is reliable.

When it comes to guns I think we have to think of them like tractors. What is the job you want to do, then what tool is best for you to accomplish the job.

So back to your question . . . what are you going to use either gun for? My office gun is also one of my concealed carry guns. I carry it more than any other and I like the FLAT sides of the Colt for carry purposes, they are comfortable in the small of my back. The gun is too heavy for all day carry, but I never do that, my carry is limited to short periods, usually no more than an hour or two. If I carried all day I would get an aluminum frame or possibly a different gun completely. I like the Colts pattern for a lot of reasons, they fit my hand well, the safety fall naturally where my thumb sits, it is very easy to shoot, you know instantly by looking at it when it is cocked, and I like the single action mechanism because the odds of pulling off target with a heavy first trigger pull are completly eliminated with this design.

On the other hand, for shooting bowling pins and for putting several bullets into a single hole in a paper target I like my Smith N Frame revolver, in 45acp, with custom grips. I can't shoot it as fast as a 1911, but it is hard to argue with multiple shot single hole accuracy.

I also have a wonderful little 380acp made by AMT that is very compact and great for all day carry. It is much more expensive than most of the pocket pistols on the market, certainly not to be compared with the $99 specials, but for a small gun you can depend on, that is easy to tote with you it is tough to beat.

All that said, I try NOT to go to places where I would consider needing a gun. I try NOT to live in harms way.

After reading posts like yours I realize that the "gun thing" is really like many "guy" things .... it isn't just the gun itself, it is the "specialness" and "bestest" nature of it. Don't take this as an insult - it's neat how everyday items can become special when you love them. Sometimes we even define who we are by our toys:

A tractor guy: It's powered by a 56hp Kubota turbo engine, uses Carraro limited-slip axles, and Rexroth hydraulics... hydraulically actuated loader quick attach, backhoe quick attach, sideshift backhoe, auxilliary hydraulics, etc... the 4-in-1 bucket uses a real construction-equipment-style separate spool with its linkage inter-connected with the standard loader lift and roll joystick... two-speed control which essentially uses an override solenoid to force the variable-displacement motor to maximum displacement, which produces maximum torque at minimum motor speed.

A gun guy: Stainless Steel Colt Officer's model... Magnaported, custom trigger, extended no-snag safety, extended beavertail, Novak sights, and a beadblasted top of the slide...

A Truck Guy: Ford '03 F-350 6.0 Powerstroke Diesel, XLT, 4x4, CC, auto, skull billet grill, nurf bars, 4" lift, BFG 315x70xR17, Weld Wheels, tonue cover, keyless entry, supersonic alarm, painted front/rear bumpers, rear sensing, privacy glass, rear slide window, power everything, drive shaft painted red, 3.73 gears, camper/tow,block heater.

A musician: Equipment I am using are a 5 string RIC 4003, a 4 string fretless RIC 4003, and a hot rodded 72 fender PJ w/ active seymore-duncans. I am looking to move up from my little Yorkville BLOC80B, to a real rig.

Just been thinking on a passive nature. Use a 25 pound or larger CO2 fire extinqisher. First you cool intruder down and then get aggressive and hit him with the empty bottle. If He's cold enough he should just shatter on the spot and you can sweep the debris. No splatter to clean up or walls to redo.

I did not really cite any statistics and I did question what I said...

That being said...can you state a specific reference showing what you state to be true?

I don't know...I have heard about so many being hurt buy guns in the home...those that shoud not have been hurt. Don't really hear that much about guns saving anyone...again just don't know.

Would really like to know...can't point at any specific references myself...just don't know...

PS... I mean real statistics...not that funny comparison that compares doctors to guns...which I have seen before and found amusing but probably a distortion.

 Henro, I like you, I really do and I often say to myself when I read your posts how you have such a different take on things and are so fair minded but it is obvious that you really did not grow up with guns as a part of your everyday life.
