Re: Guns! - I promised (yes it\'s rural related..)

Man, these posts have so many quotes and colors, I can't even tell for sure who is pro and who is brainwashed (I mean con) /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif.

I know, how about a thread on Guns.. SOLD AT WALMART! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Re: Guns! - I promised (yes it\'s rural related..)

As you say, this thread has gone way off track. In an effort to get it back on the rails, I'll pose a question regarding use...

Are you planning to have this as a pistol only for in the home or also as a potential concealed carry? The reason I ask is if it is "multi-duty" vs. one vs. the other it will affect the recommendations.

Also, have you shot the .45 much in the past? I know you say you were "avid" - just curious how much experience you've had with that particular cartridge.

WOW, what a strand. Jeez, go to deer camp for a few weeks and miss all the fun. There is a lot of good info here. I have a Kimber Ultra CDP 2 that is a 3" 1911 clone from The custom shop . Tritium night sights, knurized back strap trigger guard, Match grade chamber, barrel and trigger group. Made in the USA. You need to look to Wilson combat to do better or a similar truelly custom built fire arm. Not knocking the other 1911 clones I am just a Kimber fan /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif wilson Combat is comeing my way soon though.

I apologize. Now back to your thread and your question, not my issues. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

As I told you in my PM the other day, I have no experience with the 9mm so I cannot comment on it VS my 45. The 45 will travel through walls very easily. That is, until I heard about the safety slugs that have been mentioned here by Bob and others. I had never heard of them before and they sound like an excellent idea VS a standard slug. Shows how long I have been out of it. If I were to arm my home again, I'd still go with the short shotgun with pistol grip and birdshot. If I wanted a handgun, I'd go with the revolver, not because of the reliability, as they are very reliable, just less to think about in a panick situation.

Again, sorry for the postjacking /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Bob,

I like that one...much of the technological advances we take for granted today came from military scientists. The DARPAnet, aka the internet, was a military project too. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Anyway, since we all have cop friends & relatives it is possible that whether liberal or conservative, the cop friends that we have will have similar views to our own? I would even think many officer's views would mirror those of the towns, cities, states or regions that they live. I'll give my own example since I lived in a number of states.

In a rural county in Alabama I went to the Sheriff's Office, and I asked how could I transport my pistol in my truck to target practice. The officer told me to give them some information and come back in two days. I went back and they gave me a concealed carry permit. I didn't ask for it, but in a conservative pro-gun area the Sheriff's office thought it best that I carry a weapon.

I moved to Tennessee, and visited the rural state police barracks to find out the hand gun laws. I asked about transporting my gun - no problem, but maybe it would be best if it wasn't loaded. Okay, then I asked about home defense. They said if someone is on your property and shouldn't be there, then I could defend my propoerty. I was a shocked, and asked doesn't a bad guy need to enter my home. They said nope. Rural conservatism.

I then moved to Texas, and visited the Sheriff's office on the outskirts of Fort Worth. I asked what was a clean kill? They sain no brandishing outside, and I should only shoot if they are in my house. The one officer butted in and said it was okay, if I shot someone on my porch. The first officer said if I did that I should drag the bad guy into the house. The second officer asked where I lived. I told him in the rural area outside of the city. He replied just leave the body on the porch.

I move to Maryland, and asked the same questions. The first thing they said is that I should register my guns. (Not required by law) The second thing the officer said was that I should use a guy in self defense since I was to big to need a gun. WHAT!!! Not liking that answer I decided to take a Maryland gun safety to find out what the rules were, and I think the officer was right. I told my wife she would have shoot any bad guys while I was hiding under the covers. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Bird:

Haven't used it for those purposes either but don't see why it would not work.

Re: Guns! - I promised (yes it\'s rural related..)

First, I apologize to those who felt I hijacked the thread. I saw it as a discussion on the best way to defend a household, and I offered my point of view. I didn't intend to come across as anti-gun and, in fact, am not.

Second, I received several PM's, essentially stating that I was erring by freely admitting we don't lock our doors, given the ease of gaining information on the 'net. I replied to those by PM, but would like to reassure anyone else who is concerned in the same friendly manner that we are not necessarily defenseless. Every word I wrote was true, but, in the interests of making my point, it was not necessarily the whole truth. Suffice to say, I have never been worried, and am not worried now. It's probably enough to say that my wife and I are not alone in my household, and not everyone in my household agrees with me.

And, yes, I have been known to stand in the middle of the street in traffic. But, it was a "stop traffic" fund raiser. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

""By spray deterent I was also thinking of of a pump up water pistol filled with a water ammonia combination. It works well on dogs when out cycling.
Painted the right color with an attached lazer light it could assume some pretty vicious characteristics.""

This is, like, a joke, right? J"

No, he lives in Canada. That is the only thing they are allowed to have for self defense. The joke is their gun laws.

Here is a picture of one of my guns that I use for self defense. Not a lot of range but delivers good killing power close up! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
