Re: Guns! - I promised (yes it\'s rural related..)

I promised myself I wouldn't waste any more band width on this thread, but you asked me a direct question:

Now if we are to hold the original owner responsible for the crime, or at least have them bear the same penalty, then I suppose we need to sentence that police department to life in prison???

Obviously, you can't "sentence" an organization. But, in cases where an organization has to bear responsibility for their actions, the remedy is usually a financial penalty.

The idea behind my suggestion was to make everyone a lot more careful about what happens to their weapon. In the case of the police department, it would be infinitely cheaper to destroy the weapons they no longer want than to risk a possible large penalty.

It might also be sensible to have a provision to transfer the responsibility, i.e. in a legitimate sale. The registration would be transferred to the buyer, the sale would be recorded, and the responsibility would also be transferred to the buyer. Thus, a buyer who is responsible would not continue to carry that responsibility once the weapon was legitmately no longer in his possession.

The impetus behind my suggestion would be to force all owners to be much more careful about how they store and/or carry their firearm. Anyone who leaves a weapon in a place where it can be more or less easily stolen, or accessed by children, etc., should bear the penalty if the result of their carelessness is criminal action or a tragic accident. The idea of making the owner share the penalty no matter where the weapon ends up is because the weapon would not be in "circulation" if the owner had taken due diligence.

I mentioned in another post that I have had two weapons stolen in break-ins even though they were locked up. Obviously, I didn't make the storage secure enough. I doubt there will be any consequences of a criminal nature because these were simple .22 plinking rifles, but they could cause an accidental death in the wrong hands. the situation was that they were at our mountain cabin, which is uninhabited most of the time but which is occasionally rented. I had them in a padlocked closet where we store other items we don't want to "share" with our renters. Over the course of 15 years, we had two break-ins (one discovered by a friend who is a retired police chief, when he used the cabin). The first time, I didn't learn my lesson, and simply replaced the rifle and the padlock. Since the second incident, there are no more rifles at the cabin.

By failing to secure the rifles adequately, I am guilty of negligence, which could be contributing negligence in any incident concerning those rifles. I failed to think about that in advance. Under current law, once I turned in a police report about the thefts I'm off the hook. But, the potential consequences are what caused me to formulate my ideas about responsibility.

Of course, the entire idea depends on adequate registration of all sales, and that would probably get some people's panties in a bunch. I'll stay out of that one, except that a government that might confiscate all weapons is something else I rarely worry about, except when I think about our current Attorney General, which I try not to do.

Re: Guns! - I promised (yes it\'s rural related..)

OK! I’ve had it.

I don't know about where you live, but hunting cabins around here are always getting broken into. I would never leave a firearm at one. Heck, I wouldn't leave a case of beer at one. So let's make a law that will punish people in all circumstances because Okeedon was incredibly irresponsible (to the point that you let it happen twice). I don't want to hear about it anymore!

Worried about the AG huh? Were not supposed to bring politics on the board but allowing your jab unchallenged would be wrong.

Seen any more big terrorist hits since September 11th in the USA? Nope! Didn't think so. This administration has dealt with the irresponsibility of the last administration for 3 years. From dealing with the economic fallout of the Internet bubble which Bill enjoyed and George must now deal with, dealing with the lack of action on Bills part to deal with these terrorist organizations even though they bombed our embassies and our ships in port. Heck, he did nothing but shoot a few cruise missiles, and he only did that when the ugly intern was going to testify that the old letch did obscene acts with her.

Bet you’d like to waste some more bandwidth now huh?? Fact is, you have political views and you’ve been planting them here on my thread since the start. Fine, what can I do about that. I’d rather not go there, but I refuse to let you malign the current administration in any way as to leave a shadow of doubt to their purpose and mission. I’d rather you find a political board to take this discussion to, but I’m sure you’ll just come back and back and back instead with how Bush is bad and Bill cared so much he could cry (assuming a camera was around). Blech!

Re: Guns! - I promised (yes it\'s rural related..)

I guess I am confused, nothing new here. When I say high grade I mean thiose from a custom shop that have been hand worked. I would not dissagree in general on the pull but I still think your numbers are a bit high. I think the average shooter has not handled a firearm with a 3-4 # pull let alone ounces. Are there any guin smiths left that do hair triggers for customers ?? Havent seen one in a long time. I just cant agree with the 12-15# range. I also would not say a D/A thats is cocked is done so by default, that sounds negative but I really think we are both talking semantics and essentially saying the same things. I need to type less and shoot more /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Guns! - I promised (yes it\'s rural related..)

Don, dont you just hate it when you break your own rules ? We could have a long debate about some of the stuff you have said. I dont see the point, its a free country and you entitled to your views. I just dont see why share them for a non constructive purpose here. You might try the million mom march web site or the brady site or the ****** youth site, you know like minded places for folks with similar views. Better yet if you want to be realistic and current go to the UN sight which wants to force all member countries to ban gun ownership of citizens so only their armed forces will carry guns, Plus they demand land in each member country, just in case ! I think they are going to start flying the **** flag any day. Lets remember the puropse of the second ammendment was and IS to Protect our citizens from governments, all government. No guns should be registered, not even to buffooons who allow them to be stolen over and over. Now if you ever decide to move Don I have enough frequent flyer miles to send you to France.....ONE WAY /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Guns! - I promised (yes it\'s rural related..)

Tres, I think you have a very good point.

Semi-auto's are nice, but unless a person practices, they are less likely to use them effectively. Regardless of calibre, it takes practice to be competent with one. I can tell when I have had long times between range sessions when shooting a semi-auto.

A revolver is simple and easy to use. For me, I can pick up a revolver and be more accurate, after not making it to the range for months. The calibre does not seem to affect me as much as the simplicity.

Looking at a revolver though, I might also look at a .44. I personally am a fan of a large diameter cartridge. There is no doubting that a smaller high velocity round has the ability for significant hydrostatic damage, but there is still a lot going for a big hole that hits like a freight train.

Either way, a .357 or .44mag is a great weapon choice. First, both have plenty of power. Second, if either is too much for a shooter, they can step down to a .38 or .44 special round. And, for range work, it is hard to beat either when using a wadcutter.

That is one thing I missed about my Desert Eagle before UPS stole it. As a semi-auto, it needed stout loads to operate the slide. I could not run it with light target loads.

BTW, do you reload?

Re: Guns! - I promised (yes it\'s rural related..)

Fire extinguishers are filled with Co2 as a propellant. O2 would have significant affect if sprayed on a fire...

Robert:

I'm confused. A fire extinqisher spray that compilments the requirements for combustion??
That does not sound reasonable.

Re: Guns! - I promised (yes it\'s rural related..)

So, let' see Okeedon, you sell your truck to some feller and seems nice enough. Then he sells it to a drunk and the drunk wipes out a whole family--yeah, off with your head /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif since you are responsible for the vehicle--forever. Is that correct?
Ok, you lost your penknife. Some hobo picks it up and uses it to kill the DA. It is not the hobos fault, it is yours, you lost the knife--off with your head /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif.
In fact, I think if we started chopping heads off, well, heck, start with fingers /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif, we would not have any crime and since there is evidence to suggest crimminality is geneticly predispositioned it would soon be weeded from the gene pool. Oh, ok, I guess it is just a disease and the poor murderers just needs some love and hugs /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif and they will be OK. J
Your idea of transferring the negligence from people who rob and murder to people who do not is simply ridiculous. It is my house and I should be able to leave guns where I like.
OK, let's see, a thief breaks into your house and kills you with a baseball bats. Clearly there is no negligence upon the burgler becasue YOU did not make your house secure enough and therefore it lured the innocent criminal into breaking in and killing you /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif. Clearly you are negligent /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif and clearly the child next door is negligent as well for leaving his baseball bat outside where the thief could find it, off with his head too. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
OK, if you had never been born then you could not set into motion any "butterfly" effect that would result in harm to another. I know what, let's ban children, we will all grow old and die and then there will be no more crime.
Meanwhile back at the ranch, I am going to exercise my constitutional right to own and bear arms.
Okedon, your being silly and just trying to stir up Roque /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif aren't you becaue no one could really think that way /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif. J
