have done a lot of shooting with a .303, one of my dad's rifles, hit 2 kangaroos with one shot (probably a 15 degree deflection off the first to hit the second, unlucky bugger), hit another roo when he was jumping over a fence.
My other fave rifle was a lever action 3030, shot pigs off horseback with the one.
However best fun, was knocking down bowling pins at 50m with a .22, need to hit them in the neck or head to make them fall.

Good eye! That box is the original box of ammo my stepdad bought for the gun when he got it. Like I said, it hasn't been shot much. They are a collectors item now.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the ammo looks like .38 S&W,
and you gun probably is chambered for .38 special, which is a much more powerful round, lot's more stopping power.

I'm amazed at all the stories involving great shots with .22 cal. Maybe it's because there are so many of them and the ammo is cheap, but I've always loved a .22.

Me and two buddies were plinking in an abandoned farmyard, waaay back in my youth....some 45 years ago.

About 1/2 mile away a big ole crow lit in the top branches of some cottonwood trees. I had been doing pretty good shooting....so one of my buddies says "lets see you hit that crow". I figured what the he11....and held about 20? feet over the crow on a dead calm day and let a bullet fly. A few seconds later.....flip flip flip....the crow tumbles to the ground. My friends (and I) could not believe it.

It just goes to show 'ya.....in order to get lucky...you gotta pull the trigger. ;)

Now...as for a GOOD shot (not to be confused with lucky) I have put 5 shots into a group that enlarged the diameter of the bullet by .080". (a .243" diameter bullet enlarged to .323" hole size....with 5 bullets at 100 yards) Now that's good.....if I do say so myself (grin)

Well, I'm only 24 so my hunting experiences seem to dwarf compared to all of yours. I started hunting when I was 10 and started like many with the 22. In boy scouts I was a shotgun and rifle guide so it was pretty much my nature to go hunting.

Night hogging would top my favorite memorable times. I had a 7mm mag with a 16x leupold scope. Night hogging is when you go up and sneak up to a feeding pin at pitch black night. The guide gets a spotlight with a red cover and flash it at the pen. You have to immediately shoot at what hogs you can see.

So I see one and fire away. The scope was at 16x. Turns out the hog I shot was a piglet and it entered through the back all the way through the front. The hog literally EXPLODED so I had to job of cleaning it up. **** of a gun

Second would be just the opposite. I was in a 20 ft high treestand and saw a buck running at 30 mph across the field. I aimed 10 feet ahead since it was 250 yards away and fired. Hit his lungs. Then the 2nd mercy shot got his heart. I think those two are top in my book.

When I was home on leave from the navy. I had a 22 H&R pistol that I had bought just a plain simple single action 9 shot revolver. My dad and I were walking and we stopped at the creek by his house. the creek was pretty small but had a fairly rapid flow with a lot of currents and eddies around the rock. Dad flipped his cigarette butt in the creek about 10 or 15 feet awy. I made a comment about hitting that. He laughed and told me to go ahead and try. That cigarette butt was only about an inch long and was twirling and twisting every which way. I shot once and split it in half. It was a pure luck shot but it really impressed my dad.

I was showing my 13 y/o something on the lawn tractor one day when we saw a field mouse jump out and run across the lawn about 30 yards away. Just messing around I quick-drew my 40 cal pistol, and fired 2 rounds at the little field mouse( who was at full speed pace).

The first shot was inches behind, but him the second shot was a perfect hit. I was so surprised at the obviously lucky shot , but when I saw the look on the boys face and his "OMG MY DAD'S JOHN WAYNE" remark...I didn't have the heart to tell the little guy that I would have a better chance of winning the lotto that repeating that shot.

One day Ill tell him...... till then I'll tell the story like I want to :D

Several years ago, my wife bought me a .50 cal blackpowder rifle kit. I spent months making the fit and finish on that thing just perfect. So I had it at my B-I-Ls house in the country to show off, and his son says "lets go squirrel hunting". I figured that squirrel hunting with a .50 cal was a bit foolish, but was eager to test out the "new" rifle, so he gets his .22 scoped rifle, and I charge up the smokepole (patched round balls). He was shooting wildly at any available target, from very close to ridiculous ranges, but managed to bag a few anyway. He left me one fun shot from about 50 or 75 yards on a big one flattened out on a tree trunk about 30ft up. Took careful aim with the open sights, offhand. Totally removed the head. Makes skinning and cleaning real easy. The old-timer neighbor really appreciated some fresh squirrel for dinner! Since then, that rifle has remained a favorite - never fails to hit exactly where I'm aiming, and has never misfired (knock, knock).

There was a gun shop in Culver City named "Martin B Redding". They had a tub of barrels of different cal. I bought a 308 Springfield barrel for under $10. I worked nights at Max Factor as a mechanic. On my breaks I stepped the barrel down to a 7mm Mauser spec. Looks like a stock military 7mm.
There used to be a plinking spot up Angeles Crest forest form the desert side. I went over to the canyon rim where two guys with scoped hunting rifles were taking their time sighting down into the canyon. The son of one fellow showed me what they were shooting at, saying to the left of that small tree, now over and up there is a post, sitting on the top of the post is a beer can. I could see the post,it looked about 3/8" tall, I have open sights on the Mauser. I sat, back aginst a tree, aimed at the top of the post where the can should be and fired. The can was dead. The boy asked for one of my reloads, the bullet cast from wheel weights, and I saw that he treasured it. When we make the movie I want that scene to be done exactly.

The Golf Ball story reminded of one about the same. Back in high school I was shooting golf as well as 22s & such. Pretty good I might add too, better than any of the guys on the school golf team anyway. we were on the Tee and this robin was bobbing around out 40 or so yards my buddy was teeing up and said I'll shoot at the bird of course he missed. I teed up low and used the one wood and said my turn I'll hit it. damd if I didnt get a line drive that would have just cleared its head if it hadnt jumped up :D killed it dead pretty much getting a cannon ball in ones head does that I guess lol My drives were kind of famous for starting out low and gradually curving up at about 100 yards it would be up and gaining altitude.

The Buzzard thing was a good one too, we used to brag we had the fattest buzzards in all of Ohio, (same county as HINKLEY where the buzzards return to every year) any how it was early spring one year and we went GHog hunting but none were out. early & cold yet. damd if a buzzard wasnt watching us up high enough to look more like a black bird than a buzzard. My Brother again same massaged remington 22 LR took & laid down & followed it for maybe 10 sec and poped it off. sure enough it came down in a death spiral and landed maybe 30 feet from where he shot at. seemed like it took 5 min of spiraling down prior to a heck of a thud... worst thing was it vomited about 1/2 way down in a really nasty rain

stupid things kids do huh.. We used to also catch BATS using fishing line and treble hooks which turned out to be pretty easy
