It seems we sort of overlooked a simple solution. Here it is in two parts:

1. buy the trailer you think will do what you want it to do.
2. replace the manufacturer's tag, if any, with one you counterfeit that equals the total axle ratings or tire ratings whichever is smaller plus the tongue weight. Make the tag clarifying by having it say something to the effect of...

Gross combined capacity rating (axles plus tongue) is zzzzz lbs. This is comprised of GAWR of xxxxx lbs plus tongue weight not to exceed yyyy pounds.

Even the cute little female LEO will understand it.

NICE!!!

That looks very handy!!

If you got pulled over by johnny law in Taxachusetts, he would tell you "you're too azz loaded...put some weight on the tongue" I can tell by the trailer being out of level and the rear suspension of your truck. ;) ;)

j/k man, now enjoy it! You've earned it!

You can't fit that Yuppie Kubota TLB in a mere 10-ft, 10K dump trailer... can you? :D

The hill I'm on... my insanely short/steep driveway... is distorting your perception a bit. My truck is actually on more level ground than my trailer.

We went to great lengths to set up the trailer properly before I left the dealership. We even tried alternate hitch height settings to make sure we got it as perfect as possible for The Man! Remember, there really isn't much load there... under 1,000 lbs... and it is as far forward as they could place it at TSC with their forklift. We set up the trailer at the dealership so it would be perfectly level with a full (~7,500 lb) load.

This trailer (2007 DownEaster TR6810L5) supposedly features 6-ton axles and could have been upgraded to 12K GVWR with different wheels and tires. As bought, it has wheels and tires (15" 225's - D-rated) making for 5K GAWRs and a 9,990 GVWR. Unlike CAM, no credit was given for tongue weight. Even without seeking a legal upgrade, I may go for a 12K wheel and tire package at a later date. I'd really like to have those 16" 235-width E-rated radial tires on there.

So I got close to my true 12K GVWR goal, but not quite. Obviously, I didn't reach my desired 9,000 lb payload or my 12-ft long log/brush carrying capability. I didn't even buy a trailer with dual cylinders or one that could fit inside my garage under a car lift. :( Now I need to hide it from the evil neighbors and the town. :(

But the little trailer is full-featured (barn doors, ramps, d-rings, rub/tiedown rail, etc.) and is very well-built... 10 gauge floor, 12 gauge sides!!! ... and fit my limited budget perfectly. It should be fine for hauling nasty stumps. Delivering or removing heavy materials (think: wet fill) will be another matter. Seems I have just become far more dependent on materials delivery & removal services for some jobs.

Dougster,

Before you spend money to uprate it, make sure the trailer has enough volume in the bed to actaully hold it. Let's say your bed is 3 yards to the top edges. 3 yards of 3/4" gravel or sand would weigh ~4 tons or 8,000lbs. If the trailer weighs 1,900 lbs, then all you would need is a 9,900lb trailer.

You don't want to waste your hard earned money building a trailer with a higher GVWR (12K) than it could ever handle.

You also have to watch your hitch rating. if you hook a 12K trailer to a 10K hitch and the man pulls you over and you decided that day to really "heap" a load of wet sand on there, you could lighten your wallet even further.

I've had several trailers over 10K and never had to register them in combination with my trucks.

What I have had to do is register my truck for a maximum GCWR, the weight of the truck plus a trailer, but never was my trailer ever registered in combo at the time of registration.

I just registered my 9 ton Cam Superline about 1.5 years ago-all by itself, no truck included.
What does your Cam trailer registration card have on it for a gross weight? I think we are just looking at this a little differently and I am calling it a combination but yes, the truck must be registered for your max GCWR.
