Do you need it right now? I think 10 & 12K dump trailers are pretty common GVWR's, although most dealers are prolly low on inventory this time of year. It would help shave off some empty weight compared to a 14K trailer and leave you some extra payload if you register it ~10K lbs. A 10K GVWR trailer would actually be legal with more weight registered at 10K than a 14K GVWR trailer registered at 10K because the 10K GVWR trailer weighs less empty than 14K GVWR. Also remember, it's a bugger trying to re-register the trailer at a higher weight once you "de-register" it below its' original rating.....might make it tougher to re-sell once you decide to get rid of it. Might be tough to sell a 14K trailer to someone if they know they can't register it over 10K. How far are you willing to travel to get a good deal?
All so very true! I am still kicking myself in the pants for blowing it on that last leftover 2006 12K Cargo Express dump trailer (they don't make them anymore) that fit my needs perfectly. I hestitated because of the high mounted tail lights that could have made stump loading and unloading more difficult... and raised the trailer height to 65" when I was looking for no more than 60" max. :( Now even my 2nd, 3rd and 4th choices are all sold. Yes, the dump trailer business is really hopping up here! Who knew???

So there went all the dump trailers that fit my criteria or even came close, included barn doors, proper bed height, adequate ground clearance, could fit in my garage under a car lift if necessary (remember my zoning bylaw problem) and could still haul between 7,500 and 9,000 pounds depending on GVWR. I already lost one big job because of no dump trailer. I cannot afford to lose another one.

Once again, I will be out shopping today and tomorrow... but dump trailers are incredibly expensive up here. Still, with the cost of fuel and lost time being so high, I can only shop within about 300-350 miles and have it make any sense at all. No Florida, Texas or mid-West runs for me anymore. :(

That one 14K dump trailer is available and happens to be a relative bargain all things considered. It will not fit in my garage, but it could have certain advantages like moving around of rental equipment (think: track bobcat) by my helper. Yes, it reduces my materials payload and yes, it exposes me to certain legal & cost risks... but any further delays and none of this is going to matter anyway.

Hmmm, Feel'n pretty good about living in Taxconsin. This year I up-rated my trailer to 12,000 from 10,000. Just had to pay a bit more but that was all.

Actually, I got a bit of an education today from yet another dump trailer salesman. I asked him straight out: Why all these crazy derated stickers on all these monster trailers? He replied that for CDL vs. Non-CDL purposes, the cops go by the manufacturer's sticker and decidedly NOT the load at which you happen to chose to register the trailer... the latter being a completely separate violation of law if exceeded and you are caught. One mystery solved. :)

PA law may be quite a bit different than MA law in regard to registering your truck or trailer at different weights. It doesn't seem to be a big deal here: Pick your weight and pay your fee. On the other hand, I was told that changing the registered weight to something above the manufacturer's sticker (and certificate of origin) takes nothing less than an act of God. I was warned... don't even think about it.

Yep, that requires a form MV-41 here in PA. http://www.dot10.state.pa.us/pdotforms/mv_forms/mv-41.pdf

been there & done that. A qualified suspension mechanic with an inspection licence must fill out the MV-41 certifying that an alteration in the form of an upgrade to the suspension was added to insure that the vehicle is worthy of an uprated GVWR. Furthermore, you must submit pictures of the work that was performed to prove something was actually done to justify the uprating. THEN Harrisburg reviews your application and either approves or denies your application. If approved, they send you a sticker & uprated title. takwes weeks and you could spend all kinds of money and end up getting denied.

What a PITA.

I always thought it just involved a trip to the local auto-tags joint, fill out a form & pay some $$$, but not in PA. No way.

Have you considered getting your CDL? You don't HAVE to get an airbrake endorsement and the state MUST accomodate you even if your goal is to tow a small 15K trailer. They must test you.

I did it years ago and never looked back. Best thing I ever did.

Easy, too.

I've already got the CDL medical certificate (Had to get that for my Hoister's License)... but I just don't see any need. Even with a huge (for my truck) 14K GVWR-rated monster dump trailer, my combined manufacturer's GVWR stickers would only add up to 23,200 lbs.

The day I buy my first dump truck, I'll take the test and shell out the cash! :) I hope to be living in "Live Free or Die" land by that time! :D

Incidentally, I found two semi-decent 10K trailers today... one new leftover, one used... and while not perfect, either one of them would be a very reasonable compromise for now. Doesn't look like I'll end up having to go with that 14K monster after all.

That's great! You "set your trap" and waited-patience was rewarded with a prize!

Incidentally, Doug, I have located another backhoe down here....way more than I want to spend, but feels like a Cadillac and looks almost new....or should I say GMC truck!

Problem is, it's above my desired budget and I can't decide if I want to exceed that number.

I hate this......;)

That's great that you found a hoe that BOTH feels and looks good. Folks laugh, but I think that's really important. Speaks a lot to me about the hoe's history and previous owner. :) Now it's time for you to start some serious negotiating!!! :D

These two new trailers are NOT exactly my dream trailers. Neither fits my criteria in total... but they are available, the prices are right and I like the "no nonsense" guy selling them. We are very close on price and I plan to make a fair (in my opinion) offer on at least one or both of them this morning.

Oh man...You are too smart for your own good! :D Fact is that I just closed the deal a couple minutes ago on the phone. Finally, after all these weeks of shopping, for better or worse, I own my own dump trailer! :) No more borrowing or renting ever again!!! :D

Off to the bank and down to pick it up! Later...
