Frank_f15, Yep, it was done on Tuesday afternoon and I was released Wednesday morning. It was regarded as out-patient surgery. Went to the Doc this morning and was told that I could start driving short trips next week but still have all the restrictions as to activity and lifting.

Tried to get the wife to let me have a bell so I could ring it when I needed something but she replied she didn't want to have go through the trouble of placing it where I did not want it - go figure, hmmmph women! I will have to try a different tactic.

thatguy thanks for the links I will peruse them at my leisure. Thanks to all for your well wishes, I am slowly improving.

Amazing what they can do these days . I'm a bit confused though , why would they go in from the front when the spine is so close to the surface at the rear ?

"The cervical spine can either be approached from the front (anterior approach) or from the back (posterior approach). In general, where possible, most surgeons for most conditions favor an anterior approach. An anterior approach results in less disruption of the normal musculature and is also easier to maintain the normal alignment of the spine."

Hope this answers your question.

Since she wants to insert the bell somewhere try a whistle instead! :D:D:D:D

Wait! Not a real whistle, the one you can do yourself. Other wise the real whistle might get placed with the bell. :D

That would be hard to explain in the ER! :D

I have messed up my back three times. Twice on my own and the third time in a car accident when some one hit us. Not fun at all. Those pain pills just put me to sleep as well.

Good Luck. I hope it all works out for the better.

Later,

Literally had my throat cut Tuesday by a neural surgeon. He went in from the front of my neck just to the right of my Adams apple, then drilled a hole in the vertebrae to reach the affected area. He removed a disk between vertebrae 5 & 6, took out some calcium deposits, removed bone spurs and inserted a sterile piece of cadaver bone. Then he put in a Titanium plate and screws to stabilize the fusion. I am a little sore and have a bit of pain but actually feel better than I have in a long time. The problem now is that I am bored, I cannot drive the truck, tractor or bike and can't lift anything over 8 lbs. The doc gave me some feel good pills that I take when I need them but they just make me want to sleep (which I suppose is not a bad thing). So when I am in a lucid state I come here to read about your tractor and equipment exploits, should be down about 4 weeks or more before the Doc will release me back to full activity.

My sister in law had her throat /neck operated on the same day you did 4-14-9.
Her daughter called about 4:15 PM that after noon and said her mother come out of the operation just fine about 3:30 PM and that they planed on letting her go home the next day.
Things didn't go as planed as she had a reaction to the pain medicine they gave her .
She is still in the hospital in the rehab unit.
She has been in the hospital since 4/14/09.

I had basically the same deal on C6-7 back in Sept of 07. It was the best thing I have ever done. Pre-surgery I couldn't extend my right arm along with excruciating pain in same. I had a pretty good sore throat, for a few days post-surgery, I think it was from the tube they shove in it as opposed to the actual surgery. I fell so much better, amazing, that medical science. Just think of the poor buggers before such amazing surgery was a reality. I can see why there were so many oilers (drinkers) back then. Getting blotto would help cope with that pain and all the sleepless nights. We live in a wonderful time, I'd rather be broke than in that pain.:) Did they glue your incision shut? They did mine, I was scared to death it would blow open when I sneezed, coughed, etc...:)
LBrown, Quite the bedside manner you have there:)
John
