Can any of you folks help me with info on hammermills? I'm looking to use on wood, paper, grass, etc. I've been looking on the net, but not coming up with any first hand info.
Thanks

Both, I've searched on TBN and internet. Found some info but, nothing too in depth.

only thing that comes to mind is the huge industrial ones... I know of nothing built for the back of a CUT

I have a hammermill in my barn that was used to crack corn for the hogs. It is like a wood chipper. There is a shaft that spins with hammers that sling around and smash anything in the hopper and has a screen that has openings that regulate how large the finished product is. The one in my barn is floor mounted and driven by a flat belt from a tractor. I have seen them run off of a pto shaft instead of belt. I have seen them on a trailer but not on the three point. I think that you would need to have a large tractor to run one as the unit is pretty heavy. Mine has several of the plates (screens) with different size holes in them. Hope this helps some. big dan

Years ago we had a stand-alone shredder which would almost qualify as a hammermill. The "hammers" on it weren't on pivots. It did have a screen that allowed the finer particles out like a hammermill does. I just did a Google and apparently they're still selling it, but now it has pivoting hammers. Here's a link to it:

MacKissic Mighty Mac Shredder / Chipper Models 12PT10 & 12PT10E.

Their website has "issues". Missing links, no price shown sometimes, and on some items if you click "add to cart", and it says your cart is empty. However...

The 12PT10 is the newer version of the machine we had. The new machine apparently has pivoting hammers, a chipper for large branches fed from the side chute, and they've doubled the horsepower of the engine.

The old machine worked pretty well. We shredded a lot of newspapers, grass clippings and leaves and small tree branches. My complaints then were
  1. It was a pain on the occasion when it jammed (the pivoting hammers should eliminate that problem)
  2. We used it only a few times a year, and so it was often hard to get started (back then it had points and condensor); probably less of a problem today
  3. The machine was narrow and kind of top heavy, and just plain heavy, so it was a little difficult to move around on rough terrain (looks like that could still be a problem).
They also now offer a three point hitch PTO-driven version for $1850 (free shipping) as of July 2008. This thing is cheaper and would eliminate problem (3) above. I found that link by going to their homepage and searching for the model number that I saw on another page.
