Harbor Freight lawsuit

The tarp works well in the rain, it fails totally in the sunlight.
Since you posted on Earth Day 2017 doesn't that make it biodegradable? :confused2:

Totally agree! It is a feel good thing that politicians put in place to say they are doing something but there is no real value except to lawyers.

Except it is these very laws that give the lawyers the tools (see what I did there) to go after HF. If the law did not exist HF could do what they do without fear of repercussion. At least now they have to decide if it is worth the risk.

It's reassuring to see that there are people ( those with work ethics and common sense) who see through the lawyers adds regarding all these "Law suits". I often wonder if "these law suit eager people" actually realize the reason we have 37 warning labels on bubble gum and ever increasing prices are the direct result of these "law suits" and the only one to profit are the lawyers.

I know you probably believe this and that is where you are naive. . This is a common practice in retail and it has never been enforced.

I'm naive? No friend. I believe you are uninformed. How many dozens and dozens and dozens of examples of FTC enforcement
regulation do you need to read to get an appreciation for the effort your much maligned bureaucrats are already doing to keep those who don't read the fine print
as well as you do not fleeced as often?

Health Claims | Federal Trade Commission

L.A. prosecutors are accusing four big retailers — JC Penney, Sears, Kohl’s and Macy’s — of tricking shoppers - LA Times

these are just a few of the links I found, there are many others.
Truth in Advertising is a big deal whether you think it is or not.
It won't stop all the crooks, and they will keep on trying, and yes the naive and gullible
will be taken advantage of. But do you want your elderly mother getting ripped off over the phone by some sweet talking salesman
without any legal recourse?

There are clearly excesses of government. I just don't see cleaning up the crooks and false advertisers is a bad thing.
Let's stop studying a few endangered frogs instead.

Ponzi schemes, multi layer marketing, false advertising. It's all being prosecuted.
If you think this is a waste of money, ask the folks who got ripped off.

In general, calling folks you don't agree with naive, gullible and stupid shows you'd rather go for a personal attack then discuss the facts.
Can we stick with the facts?

I can 100% guarantee that every poster here that is bashing HF and or defending this lawsuit, or just plane stupid enough to think that HF is doing anything more than selling half way good tools at cheap prices is doing so on an Asian designed, manufactured, assembled, and distributed computer, phone or tablet.

The US still leads the world in design. Most computer stuff is designed in the US and built in Asia.

I saw a story about Apple and their Chinese manufacturer, Foxconn. Their deal is Apple designs things, Foxconn builds them. Each company makes about the same amount of profit on the sale of an Apple product. The difference is Apple has 50,000 employees and Foxconn has 500,000. Which is why working at Apple is a dream job and working at Foxconn is like a prison sentence.

Yep! And it just becomes a cost of doing business and the prosecutors will get an agreement and a nice check for their next campaign.

This stuff has been around forever - it's as old as seducing a girl - it's just seduction of another form. Who is to say what is lying and what isn't? Since everybody has unbeatable deals why aren't these prosecutors going after everybody?

this is a perfect example. Now just how much quality can a reasonable and prudent buyer expect in a three dollar tarp that weighs half a pound?
Versus the US made ones which I have, wonderful heavy tarps that will last almost forever if I keep the crud off them. But one tarp costs 3 bucks and one costs
60 dollars. Twenty times the cost.

We all have to have reasonable expectations when we buy things. Most of us have champagne taste and beer budgets so we try to get the best value out of what we buy,
at the price we can afford. Harbor Freight does a wonderful job in their segment; but clearly they need to revise their marketing strategy. Just because it works does not mean
it's a good thing...though I'm sure HF's marketing staff has gotten big bonuses due to their success. Now they may be tasked for reinvention; will be interesting to see if things change
in the future.

Market price: what they give is inflated list price nonsense; no one buys at that price
Our regular price: Our normal full profit list price which is greatly discounted from the fictitious market price
Our sale price: What most of us good shoppers buy at, unless we have a coupon
Coupon price: The best deal (usually)

And the very lowest coupon prices I have found are in the backs of lifestyle magazines, hunting, boating and rv magazines. Where they sell the one ton lift at 99 bucks, not 139. I bought two lifts at 99 bucks. But the real issue is all those folks who bought at 139 thinking this was a legitimate sale price when every month HF is also offering the same thing at 99 bucks elsewhere.
That's a forty percent swing in price, huge in retail.

Caveat Emptor. Buyer Beware. That's what many of you want to leave it at thinking this is foolish government interference.
Dishonesty is rarely divulged until law enforcement (or your faith) forces the issue, forces the spotlight of publicity on a dishonest act.
Look at VW; do you think they would have divulged anything about their diesel cheating if the authorities had not caught them?
No, you need enforcement.
And yes, we have to be careful what we ask for. No one wants a police state or mind control. Even if some minds need it...
Then I think Darwinism steps in once you keep within the lines.

I think a lot of folks are so incensed by government gun control laws that they paint a broad brush of negativity towards other
essential government services. And the fact that our elected officials often turn out to be crooks doesn't help.

Having been in the insurance underwriting/claims end of insurance for decades, I can tell you that it's amazing how many people do stupid things
and hurt themselves and others. Today just look at folks texting in cars while driving. I want every one of them to get a six point ticket and next time get
their license revoked for a year. Tough? Not if you are risking a catastrophe acting selfishly.
Can we legislate selfishness? Not very well nor should we. But you have to make lines in the sand where folks can't cross. That's what our laws are for.
Apparently the Federal Trade Commission has decided HF went over the line. Doesn't mean it's a horrible company; but it does mean they need to turn off
the marketing fog machine. We shall see.

You get a free (with purchase) microfiber cloth to dry your tears and polish your rock!

Void where prohibited. Some restrictions apply. Not available in all states. This is not an offer to buy nor a solicitation to invest. If you need the government to protect you from routine marketing hype what are you ever going to do if you actually have to think for yourself? See dealer for details.

"And yes, we have to be careful what we ask for. No one wants a police state or mind control. Even if some minds need it...
Then I think Darwinism steps in once you keep within the lines."

Do I still get my free coupon........

And exactly what is accomplished by this?

  1. The lawyers make a bunch of money.
  2. A few customers get a few cents.
  3. The poor and vulnerable are once again reassured they don't need to make the effort to think or to educate themselves because Big Brother will protect them, therefore, they continue being suckered.
  4. HF (or whomever) just adjusts their methods and carry on suckering the suckers.
  5. The people with common sense are unaffected because they were never stupid enough to fall for the hype in the first place.

The only significant change is in the lawyer's pockets.

Oh, and the "government is the answer" crowd gets to preen in their supposed moral superiority because they are the ones who care about the vulnerable.

While doing everything they can to make sure they stay vulnerable.
