Personally...most times I'd be better off without those "service" people...I'd rather do it myself.

Excuse me? You "expect" $5 to take my simple order, bring me a glass of water, carry over a plate of food, and bring me a bill? Nah, I don't think so. You did less than 5 minutes work for me. You'll get a buck and that's still $12 an hour, more than your worth. You want REAL money? Get a REAL job. Waitressing is for school kids and second jobs for wives. You can't expect to raise yourself and your children on such a lowly job. Get an education, some skills...don't expect ME to pay your way because you "didn't like being married", or you "wanted to have a baby". Sorry, life is full of choices...make some better ones.

The REAL problem here is the destruction of the family...womens lib...but we can't talk about that...it's not politically correct.

It is a little late to reply to this post but since you did not participate in the discussion about solving the tractor problem in the original post, why do you feel it is necessary to jump in here to complain about tips in a restaurant?
If you go to a lady of the evening for a little nookie do you ask for a refund because you only took 20 seconds to do the deed?

Just wanted to get a point across to Joe that he should "walk a mile in the other persons shoes" before he passes judgment on who or what they are. Your job is what you make it to be. Every single person is valuable and unique, and has their very own special set of circumstances. Joe should know that by now.

I was trying to get that point across...that I HAVE walked a mile in those shoes. That is why I moved on. I've done crappy, lowly jobs and they convinced me that that is NOT what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Just as Dave's children learned. Crappy, lowly jobs are for kids and they teach life lessons. You DON'T treat those people like crap, and you DON'T want to do that kind of job forever either.

Please don't compare a "server" with anything else. Again, you're comparing apples to oranges. There is NO caparison between a waitress and somebody digging holes, pounding fence posts, chopping wood, stacking bricks, etc. Servers must be compared to other servers. Why don't you "tip" the person who does anything else? The menu shows the price...technically, that's it. The check comes and THAT is what you owe. Just like when the garbage bill comes, the electric bill, the bill from the insurance company. Why do we have some jobs where we OWE them extra beyond the bill? I say a tip SHOULD be ONLY for an exceptional job done, when you had special requests above and beyond that which is ordinary. Why do we tip others? Taxi drivers, Bellboys, etc. We've all been conned.

As for being "only" a food server...well, what CAN I say? It is a "lowly" job. Does it make the person "bad"? Lazy? Of course not, it does however show a lack of motivation or a lack of the ability to better themselves. Agreed? Does anyone as a child say..."gee dad, when I grow up I want to be a waiter..."? It's a job you "settle for" when you can't find anything else. Or, it's the job you "end up with" if you don't have any drive or ambition. You can't possibly disagree.

I really don't know why anyone would get so upset because "I" personally don't think a waiter/waitress deserves 20% of the meals value. In fact, a flat 20% doesn't make ANY sense. A waitress at a "dive" where the whole meal costs $5 gets $1 for doing as much or more work than the waitress at the fancy schmancy place where the meal costs $100. Just because of the "place" she works, doing the same or less work, she receives $20. Is that FAIR? No, and I won't give it to her.

I guess people just like to argue...look at how many posts there are about which oil to use, whether off road or on road are better... It's human nature to think you're right and the other guy is clueless. In THIS case I'm right...

OK, I'm a retired, disabled veteran, living on only my social security...I guess since I can't afford a big tip, I'm not "allowed" to eat out occasionally? I can defend YOU and your children, but I'm not good enough...no, RICH enough for a decent meat now and then? Don't judge until you've walked a mile in MY shoes...eh? No, that's not true either...just something to think about...

I don't think their "service" is worth 20%, that all...end of discussion.

OK, I win...according to here: The Original Tipping Page - Tips | US | Restaurant a tip is NOT required!

Waitstaff - The source of many e-mails, this section is the most controversial on the site. Especially the 'waiter / waitress entry. My opinion is: tip your waiter / waitress. But this is not to say that it should be ever considered 'required'. Recently, most wait staff have lost sight of the fact that a tip is a gratuity and NOT a must.

Boy, joe, you are a really bitter individual. Your disability must have been on psychological grounds. If you are so poor, why do you log onto a tractor site to rant and rave about tips for waiters\waitresses? What make and typr of tractor do you own? This is still a site for discussions about TRACTORS, not a site for mentally imbalanced individuals who vent their spleen.
How did you supposedly "protect" me? Just what war did you serve in?
Just what exactly did you win? No matter how much you rant and rave you are still the "BIGGEST LOSER"!

When we start weighing a person worth based on their pay.. we've hit a real low spot in our history, IMHO... Work can be a personal thing. if a person likes their job.. good for them.. don't matter what it is.

Can we all end this discussion? It has gotten so off topic that it is time to end it. It does not concern tractors any more, so please stop posting off topic replies.

But THAT is EXACTLY what a "pay scale" does. We value the "worth" of a person by how much we pay them! The kid next door that you pay $10 to cut the grass has less worth than the plumber you pay $300 to fix your pipes. The kid can change his worth as he acquires skills. A CEO has more worth than the janitor. The chef has more worth than the waitress. A person who WORKS has more value (to society) than someone who doesn't. You're just kidding yourself and living in a dream world if you think this isn't true.

ANYONE who can easily be replaced, has less worth than those who can't.

Why is the internet so full of liberal thinkers...socialist would be a better description...they want everyone to live as equals and sing songs together. Reality doesn't work that way... Reality has doers, followers, and then there are worthless individuals with no more value than a dead dog.

Everyone has their own "worth". Your worth is determined by what you can and what you actually do with yourself. The crackhead mother of 10 on welfare with half her kids in jail has no worth in my book. The entrepreneur who starts a successful business that employs 100 people has a high value. We ALL have a value based on what we decide (or can) do with our lives.

We may all be equal under the law...but when it comes down to "brass tacks", we are no more equal than a $100 bill is equal to a $1 bill. Both are human and both are made of paper, but each has one that is superior to the other.

If you had to go to a deserted island to live forever, you could bring 10 people to start your new "world", aren't there some people you would consider "more valuable" than others? Wouldn't you consider some women as "valuable" even though they had no skills useful to carving out a wilderness? Value or "worth" is situationally variable. Usually... Some don't have any though...like the crack mother...we wouldn't take her along, would we. We might want to leave behind the "prissy" waitress too, we can't worry about broken fingernails can we. We might not want the CEO either, in this case the janitor MIGHT be a better fit due to his strength and willingness to follow your leadership.

My point here is this: we all have our "own" value and that value is always changing based on the current situation. A waitress may be of great value to the businessman having dinner with his clients, but none to the person dining alone who could and would, willingly get his own food from the kitchen. The CEO may have great value to the company and to society because of his high income (taxes paid), whereas at home he may be worthless to his wife and children. The janitor may have NO real value at work and to society but could be the "love of his families lives" at home and therefore has a very high value to them.

OK, we can end it now... This has gone on and on, it's gotten away for tractors AND it's gotten away from "whether a waitress deserves 20%" too. It's become a commentary on society and a persons "worth". I'm always up for debate, but I can leave it at this...

P.S. My tractor started right up yesterday...about 60 degrees at the time. I had to use the box blade for an area by the pond that was washing out after a heavy rain. Anyone have any good suggestions as to the best way to prevent it from happening again? Show me your worth...

I have several suggestions about preventing your tractor from starting again.

1) Remove battery.
2) Pour dirt in the gas tank.
3) Drain the fuel.
4) Stay in your house\trailer and leave the tractor alone, while you rant and rave about a person's "Worth" on the internet.
5) Sell tractor.
6) Use dynamite to blow the tractor to pieces.

If these "worthy" suggestions are not enough to keep your tractor from starting, please let me know and I will try to find other methods to help you to keep your tractor from starting.

As to "WORTH". You claim to be our hero who saved us from the evil forces of this world and now you live on your income from Social Security disability, so what is your "WORTH"?

The next time you decide to dine out in a restaurant ask the manager if you can go into the kitchen to cook and serve up your own meal and see what happens. You spent the time to look up the government policy about tipping, so do a search about regulations regarding a restaurant :) patron going to the kitchen and serving themselves.

I don't know why I bother to reply to your posts, other than your poor attitude about wait staff and that you are one of the most obnoxious persons I have encountered on this site.
Rant on joerocker but I am out of here.
My Dad once warned me about waging a war of wits with someone who had no ammunition, so bye joe and keep ranting.
