Not to insult you...but... I hardly feel a waitress is necessary.
They aren't at all necessary, in the types of establishments that most servers would prefer you frequent.
The restaurant business is set up the way it is, we aren't going to change it anytime soon. They get paid the way they do. If you find the need to patronize a place that employs waitstaff, please tip. 15-20% is generally accepted for good service.

Waitresses was just an example...there are many "service" people who I could do without, and if I had their tools, that would include those mechanics mentioned too. There are too many people who are either incompetent, or who think that every little thing they do deserves some "big bucks". I personally LIKE to do things for myself...it usually comes out better that way...but that's just me.

Dave_Lilly, If the toughest thing your 4 kids put up with were some rich a$$holes at a country club...well, I'm simply floored that you would consider that "tough". As a kid, I stacked bricks, picked vegetables, dug ditches. Now THAT is hard work. Do your kids even know what hard work is? It wasn't "hard" work to bring a few plates of food and not receive anything for it. Dig a hole for several hours for a few bucks and tell me which is worse. I'm GLAD that they got an education and moved on to success. That's what we're supposed to do. Kids and the people who either can't or won't learn a skill do the crap and the smart ones learn to do other, less physical, higher paying jobs. That's what (I'll bet) 99% of the people here did.

Soundguy, How am I "classing" them? All I said was they shouldn't EXPECT to raise a family doing such "easy", "unskilled" work. I stand by my comment that such work is NOT meant as a sole family income. And they shouldn't expect "us" to pay, what in my opinion, are large sums of money for basically nothing. I stand by my comment that such work is for kids and as second jobs.

How is a waitress a "necessary" job like a waste water handler? I think I struck a nerve and you flew off the handle and are comparing apples to oranges. I can EASILY give my own order, pick it up, and remove the dishes. I do it at fast food places. A waitress is no more than a convenience, an EXPENSIVE convenience.

Now let me expound on my post a bit...I don't ALWAYS leave just a dollar...that was an exaggeration...I'd LIKE to most times, but I don't. I usually leave about 10%, well within your stated 7% that the government assumes. BTW, how many servers do you suppose declare MORE than that required 7%? Not many, if any...so, let's add liar to their job title too?

I was talking about servers who EXPECT $5 no matter the bill. Not for a $50 bill, or a $40 bill, no, they expect $5 for a $20 bill... It's not a matter of my being able to afford it, I can because I don't throw away my money needlessly. And that, IMO, is exactly what you are doing when you give them that kind of money for a tip. Most servers make well over $100 a day/night. Most people who do REAL work don't make that much. Roofers don't make that kind of money. Don't they work harder? I guess I see the difference and make the comparison and "pay" accordingly.

So, in summary, I don't think less of "service people", I just don't believe I should have to overpay for their services because that is ALL they can do. I believe that you get what you're worth, what your "service" earns you, no more. AND, if you want more money for a better life...learn to do something else like fixing tractors.

It's obvious that you have no knowledge of what a waitress or waiter has to endure. First of all is that any tips they get have to be shared with other staff, including busboys, who do no more than clearing the table. Another thing they have to put up with is obnoxious patrons who continually demand extra treatment because they think the waitness\waiter is only there to satisfy their every demand and then leave a lousy tip. The waitrers\waitresses are working below minimum wage and rely upon tips to make a halfway decent wage.
Before you demean my children I would ask you how much have your children accomplished in life? Mine are making big bucks. Are yours still digging holes, stacking bricks and working all day for a few bucks?
You are beginning to sound like a bitter redneck a$$hole. If you don't want to pay a tip go to MacDonalds, Burger King or another drive through where tips are not expected.
You seem to be a blooming idiot that doesn't know squat about tractors but feels that is necessary to change this topic from tractors to your rant against hard working restaurant staff.
Get a life.

Bob Brooks...Dave here is the one who needs the medication...chill dude! It's just a discussion. Besides, if you actually READ my post, I said this: "I'm GLAD that they got an education and moved on to success. That's what we're supposed to do." I think maybe you you got so upset you never saw anything else? Or was it the bit about whining over low tips? I'll stand by that comment too. That is NOT a life altering, going to give them a complex, experience. I'm sorry, I just don't think it's a big deal. If you hate something you're doing...find something else.

Anyway...back to other thoughts...

Why do people take things so personally? My God, It's only words and other people opinions. Are some of you like this in "real life"? Do you go crazy screaming and yelling at the slightest disagreement? I know people like that...and I avoid them like the plague...very disagreeable people to be around...maybe a reason some people spend so much time on-line? People in the real world don't like people like them much.

So tell me, WHY can't people tell others what they think without being "attacked"? Is there a monopoly on "being right"? Only some of you are? My opinion is THAT wrong?

Dave, may I respond? Will you act reasonably? Civilly?

At SOME places they share tips, not all...and "in my opinion" the busboy does more actual WORK than the waitress. If you're going to spout about "obnoxious patrons who continually demand extra treatment because they think the waitness\waiter is only there to satisfy their every demand" then ALSO mention the busboy stuck with a mess after the "family from ****" that leaves a foot tall pile of food everywhere including the floor.

So, I guess you're saying to me: "I want YOU to subsidize those a$$holes who treat the waitress like crap"? Like I said, I have a SIMPLE order, and I don't ask for extra stuff. I'm in and out FAST. I tip according to MY experience and what the waitress has to do for ME. I won't tip based on what everyone else demands from a server. Besides, isn't the whole tipping thing no more than a way to inflate the prices on the menu by 20%? If it's mandatory to tip, why not just eliminate it altogether and add 20% to all the menu prices? MANY countries don't even HAVE tipping. It SHOULD be a way to show appreciation for EXTRA service. Not for simply doing a simple job.

As to "The waiters\waitresses are working below minimum wage and rely upon tips to make a halfway decent wage.", again, I'll state that it's not supposed to more than minimum wage! It's supposed to be a LOWLY part time KIDS job. It's not SUPPOSED to be a career! It's really to teach you that "this sucks", I want to do better with my life so I NEVER have to do this kind of work again! It's supposed to be like the crap work I did as a kid, incentive to "move up".

The rest of your post was simply inappropriate insults...

Bob,

I'm really Warren Buffett and I'm now retired so I have the time to voice my opinions on a tractor site. How do you think I got my billions? By not giving my money away to other people. By not wasting money on name brand tractors. By not tipping excessively.

Does it really matter?

Lets all get along...

Agreed...and the PERSON isn't necessarily lowly...the JOB is.

They may have some "problems" because they are satisfied doing such menial work...that's a personal thing within them though...not for us to ponder or argue.

MY own view? I'd rather MAKE a nice dinner than go out for one. VERY infrequently I find something that I can't make myself and better...for 1/4 the cost...NOT including the tip...

Have a great day...

Go out to dinner and remember to take care of your servers...

Somebody has to...

Kidding...

Unfortunately, in this country, it is set up the way it is. Because we may disagree with it doesn't make acceptable to take it out on the server.

No job should be considered "LOWLY". By the definitions you apply, we would all get the worst service and experience dining out.
Unless it is you're inability to correctly communicate your message (and I don't feel this is the case), you appear to be looking down upon others whose employment you feel to be beneath you. I can't see how you could possibly find many in agreement.

Gentlemen I understand everyone's position and I was only trying to point out (in defense of Tractorguy1) that things are not alway as they appear :D

I did check out Tractorguy1 profile cause I wanted to e-mail him about our concern with his broken tractor - no e-mailing allow:rolleyes:

Bob that's not a fair question (what he does for a living) cause I think 90% of the members here would love to do what you're doing for a living:) :) -Ed

(Not sure if they'd like to spend a thousand days at sea though).

I understand Ed. I love my job and the people I work with, but probably 90% of me would rather be doing what the TBN members do. :) Just wanted to get a point across to Joe that he should "walk a mile in the other persons shoes" before he passes judgment on who or what they are. Your job is what you make it to be. Every single person is valuable and unique, and has their very own special set of circumstances. Joe should know that by now.

Thanks Bob been reading your posts for awhile (on another site) and knew you loved your job didn't know about time at sea. Isn't it amazing how I missed that? We all see only so much, as we like to see.

BTW thanks for sharing all your technical stuff -Ed

It appears to me that you are the one acting like the fool. Your idiotic rants demean any LOWLY person who has to put up with people that feel the same as you. You are the one who started the insults and if your skin is so thin that you can't take it, too bad!
This site is supposed to be about TRACTORS, not your self-centered ravings. If you have a reply about TRACTORS, post it. If you want to continue with your bull about service personnel go to the "Poor Me, The Waitress Expects A Tip From A Nasty Customer' site.
If anyone should be on medication, it is you.
