Hard surface rod

So I often see hardfacing run in various hatching patterns...my understanding is that it helps trap rock or dirt on the sides of the implement so that the dirt/rock that is moving wears against the trapped material instead of the bucket or implement. So would there be any point in using beads of hatch patterns with a regular rod to do something similar, or would you not get the same effect as with the harder rod?

The hardfacing Ive seen is a large flux coated bronze rod containing small chips of tungsten. This is applied much like the brazing process. Ive seen it on the bottom of horse shoes - 3 one inch areas one at the front of the shoe and 2 at the opposing ends. This gives a horse traction when walking over pavement. Without it pavement is very slippery with just a smooth shoe.

Same effect, just that the build-up weld metal will wear faster because - wait for it - it's not as hard.

But for us here with our tractors it would be fine.

Thanks Every one . Although I could likely run the rod , Really have nothing to run / burn it onto ??? Not even sure what My Dad had it for . Looks like Maybe15 to 20 rods are missing out of 1 corner . Guess I could weigh it to see how much it weighs , Likely just take the storage box and put it box on the top shelf for another 20+ years .

I think that's the definition that was giving me a headache.

Many times, esp. on the internet, folks have to prove how their a step above everyone else. It's just their method to make them feel important to others. Usually don't have a lick of common sense either!
