Has anybody tried the Hi Point handguns?

I shoot reloads in mine. I have an adjustable gas block that ensures I don't bend the op rod.

the other 99% of the population will be stuck trying to find ww2 m2 ball, or damaging their op rods.. that was my point.

the reloaders and people with mod'd guns won't have an issue.. that said.. .. the m1g won't be my weapon of choice with the brown smelly stuff hits the air circulating device.... unless that's the only gun I got when the splattering starts. ;)

A full size 1911 45ACP doesn't kick bad in my opinion. The gun is typically 32+ oz or more so that helps. I tried for years to get my wife to shoot a semi auto and I finally gave up and bought her a revolver. In my NRA classes I have demo pistols of all types for folks to do practical exercises on and handle. I often see people who are dead set on knowing what they want to buy but have never handled said gun before and it is always interesting to see them try the 'battery of arms' and they can't do it in a classroom much less a high stress/life death situation. Best to keep it simple.

some people also assume a big semi auto might kick mor ethan a medium revolver.. and they are not taking into account weight ( absorbing recoil ) of the semi, nor the slide / action helping as well... vs the revolver essentially being a solid single shot, each shot.

A revolver is much louder also...which could be an issue if you stop firing and want to hear what's going on. (I'm temporarily deaf after 6 rounds in a little .22)

I can't add too much to what has already been said about the .45 vs 9mm recoil. Sure the .45 has more recoil but is usually chambered in heavier pistols to help absorb that recoil. Also different guns fit different people in different ways. A proper fit helps with recoil mitigation. And as mentioned excessive muzzle blast can negatively effect recoil perception for the person behind the trigger. My wife put many thousands of major power .45 rounds downrange in years past without any apparent damage. But in general a .45 does have more recoil than a 9mm.

True, True. ... anything gas operated really.

Y'all have just about convinced me to go out and buy a High Point.

In our area there have been a lot of people come home to find somebody in their house. One lady came home from work early and this guy had stuff piled on her front porch getting ready to load in his car. Others have walked in to a gun pointed at them while the perp ran out the door. Because of this I took my Ruger .22 auto and put it in a hidden spot right at the utility room door where we usually come in the house. Have a magnetic holder on the side of a freezer. You really have to feel around to find it but if you know where it's at you can put your hands on it quick.

Sounds like the High Point would be a good, cheap, and reliable weapon to replace the little Ruger.

My question is, how much more does the .45 kick compared to the 9mm? I want something my wife would be comfortable shooting.

But then again when the SHTF my normally calm intelligent wife tends to panic. So maybe a double action revolver would be the ideal for that use. Point and shoot, no safeties, no mag release button.

Did a quick search and a 38 Special Rock Island revolver is available for about $100 more than a High Point. Got good reviews too. Anybody got one?

My wife has shot my .45 but just from the shear size she doesn't like too, I bought her the Bersa 380

They used one of these guns in the movie blade runner, they modified it to fire all 4 bbls at once in the movie. :)

Thanks! Good trivia. I remember that gun was just plain huge. Thought it was a prop.

Do you remember Han Solo's "blaster" in the original Star Wars? It was a slightly modified Mauser "broomhandle" 96. A prop, yes, but still made from a real "ugly" pistol.

Those I've seen before and suspected it was copied off of that design. Great movies!

Yeah not throw all women in this bucket because of course many can handle larger calibers... but I think a good general rule of thumb is to stick with a 38 or 9mm or smaller for ladies. And of course they need to practice and not be afraid of the gun.

I am sure one can find a 9mm that kicks more than a 45 but good luck. I also agree with those who mentioned having your lady try it out for fit and make sure they can operate the slide if you really want to go that way. Personally, I think for seldom fired, self protection in a panic situation, a revolver is by far the best.
