Has anybody tried the Hi Point handguns?

It is a great gun to carry in the truck and get banged up without having to worry about scars & scrapes.

A Hi point is about the biggest POS made. If you are looking for a "good" gun keep looking. That is like looking for a "good" tool at Harbor Freight. About the only good use for a Hi point is to shoot your ( insert word here ) and throw it in a lake.

Depends on how you define POS. In terms of dependability, I strongly disagree.
In terms of weight and looks -- maybe so.
It's not made to show off. But it'll sure save your butt.

Kinda like a cheap tool from Harbor Freight... When you're broke down in the middle of nowhere, a $1 screwdriver is the same as a $20 screwdriver in that moment.

I've got a Hi Point 9mm handgun and 2 of the carbines. Absolutely, the handgun is heavy and cumbersome and low capacity and cheap - but it has gone bang everytime I pull the trigger, and its accuracy is better than I am.

Both carbines are very reliable and very accurate as well. And Hi Points customer service, for me, has been second to none.

I bought a used 9mm carbine with an aftermarket stock on it. Took it home and it would only fire one cartridge, then it would fail to feed. Hi Point firearms have a lifetime warranty that follows the gun, not the owner. I called them and explained the situation, and they said that they would honor the warranty, but I would have to buy a stock because they would not warranty the ATI aftermarket stock (fair enough, I thought). I bought the classic stock from them for $20, and all I sent them was the barreled action.

The gun was returned to me in short order, with about 80% new parts (according the checksheet that was included), as well as TWO additional magazines and a sling. I couldn't have bought the accessories for the price that I paid. Plus, it has functioned flawlessly since it's return.

While the handguns are clunky, I find the .40 and the .45 version to be comfortable. I have not bought them yet, but I do plan to, just because of my satisfaction with their other products. I also want to get a carbine in .45.

Those are my experiences and opinions, for what they are worth. I don't think anyone can go too wrong with a Hi Point.

Good luck and take care.

I have their .45 handgun and as others have said, it's big, clunky, ugly, but has been dependable. I like it because I don't feel bad about letting a $200 gun bounce around under the seat of the truck or boat, while I wouldn't want my more expensive guns bouncing around. It goes bang every time you pull the trigger. I'm not sure what more a person could ask.

I have never shot one. But I have never heard anything bad about how the shoot. or their reliability. I think some are expecting WAY too much. Its a budget reliable gun. It may not have the best ergos, nicest fit and finish, best sights or grips. BUT, its a budget gun. If you want a gun that shoots and shoots well and nothing more, HP is good. IF you want one that feels like a million bucks in your hand, get something else.

What makes it a POS? because it isnt purdy looking? or may be a bit heavy?

ITs like comparing a chevy 1/2-ton w/t to a cadillac. Is the truck a POS because it may not handle well, or have nice ergos and power everything, or look as purdy?

I'm with GreenYellow and LD1 on this, have shot HP 9mm carbine (ATI stock) and HP .45 ACP pistol. Neither were much to look at but both were surprisingly accurate (fixed-barrel, blow-back action is why ..) with a variety of new and mil-surp ammo, about which neither was the least bit fussy to cycle reliably. I might be looking for a used HP, as many folks get tired of being flamed for owning them and trade up at a lo$$ only to gain prestige.

Once you get over the fugly aesthetics you have to judge by performance when the chips are down, and HP seems to deliver for cost. Yeah, I appreciate fine guns, have Kimber, Wby, Mod 70, and other quality long guns and Kahr PM9 & P40 'for carry'. That said I carry Kel-Tec P3AT in warm weather & Makarov or CZ 82 (both 9x18) when wearing a jacket. (I hunt with 'old-mil' Mausers (M93, M98) or SMLE No4 Mk1 ... all done mostly to upset any who think only pretty guns are worthy. :D)

IMO the only meaningful knock on the Hi-Points is that they're too bulky for most folks to 'pack'. (I'm 6' 2" 170lbs and don't wear duds several sizes too big like the young folks often do). Gotta be a top choice for a 'farm gun' or plinker. If you want to be all fussy or fancy about something, load your own ammo. ;) tog

btw, don't confuse 'stainless (finish)' with real SS. As with many MLs this is often just a surface treatment (electroless nickel, etc) but, that said, for the most part is just as good.

They are a lot heavy ( like double what a comparable gun weighs ) The trigger pull is terrible. The fit & finish is all around terrible. I have handled several, but never actually shot one so I don't know about the accuracy. I'm sure the accuracy matches the rest of the gun. They might suit some guys, but I will keep my $1500 plus 1911's. A 1911 regardless of the quality just isn't very good for concealed carrying. The op said he would love to have a NICE 1911, and a Hi point certainly isn't. He never said anything about leaving it under the seat of a truck.

Sounds like a perfect gun to keep in the nightstand. You want a stiffer trigger pull in a self defense situation. And when you run out of ammo you have a heavier weapon to bludgeon them with.

Take a line from mahindra advertising, if it truly is double the weight, it must be twice as strong having all that extra metal:laughing:
