I built a steel frame that attaches to the top of the sides of the BB with a pin on either side. A rectangular frame of angle iron hangs out beyond the rear of the BB, creating an area where I can place weight with increased leverage on the blade. I built it to fit three 4gal. milk crates which can be filled with anything heavy (I use rocks). You can stack the crates, so weight is very adjustable.

Later I learned that a cooler full of frosty beverages;) fits perfectly also:cool:

I tried to post a pic of my plans from Google Sketchup, but am having trouble. If you want, I'll get out there with a camera and take a pic of it.

I use 9 ciment blocks and a drainage pipe to adjust the height.

My solution isn't pretty...I strapped a 55 gallon plastic barrel on it's side with a hose bib and a 2"plug installed. Fill it with water when you need the weight and drain it when you don't. Thought it would be temporary but I've had it on for five years.

my buddy added several suitcase weights to his..........i've never asked him if it helped or not.......i assume it did..
but it was ugly:rolleyes:
+ + + +
We are far enough off the highway ugly, beautiful, implement color, brand name can't be seen or cared about....
We have a China made 5' box blade that does everything we need it to do at a much cheaper price than other options..
I use it as ballast when needed and do use the only 2 JD, 42lb suit case weights if it seems needed.. Works well for us...

I have never thought about this before but probably some of my tasks would work out a bit better with some extra weight on the BB. And because I recently bought some 3 1/2 oil field pipe which I had cut into 7' lengths and which is really, really heavy I am thinking I could lay a couple of those on the top just above the scarifiers and wire them in somehow. I think each section of that pipe must weigh 80 lbs. or more.

I have chained telephone posts and logs to box blades in the past and have had moderately good luck. Hard part is getting a 5 or 6' long 14"-18 " diameter log in the proper position. Usually took a couple adjustment cycles

When I bought my Kubota it came with a 7' Land Pride box blade. That box blade had 5 each 100 lb suitcase weights mounted on top and chained in place. That setup has worked well for me so I've never removed the weights.

I added a 3/4 x 6 inch piece of flat steel on edge across my bb frame and then added 6 42lb weights on top of the flat bar. Really helps cutting into hard ground. This is the best pic I have right now.

I don't see the need.
I am either ripping (with the teeth down) or levelling/smoothing.
If my top link is set right I don't need any down pressure (weight).

Lead is about the most dense material that is generally available and perhaps affordable.
Lead shot used to be about $12 per 25 lb bag, more recently $35 and since the pandemic $45 - - could come back down in a year or so.
Used wheel weights ? - - maybe you could scrounge them from a tire place somewhere, although I suspect that they have recycle contracts.

Again, lead is DENSE ! 25lb bag isn't much bigger than 2lb bag of sugar - so if you need weight in a limited space it could be the way to go.
