Im looking to make one if these type of ground tilling/ smoothing attachments for my ATV. It will be for light road smoothing and making food plots at a hunting lease. The land was logged about 8 yrs ago. The trails are old skidder roads, some un touched for 8 yrs. It will be left there, about 4 hrs away and i only get there about 3x a year.

I have a large pile of scrap steel and more than a few hours under my belt with a welder.

How does say 1/2in rebar hold up to getting drug across rocks and sand?

1/2" rebar and rocks = bent 1/2" rebar. Sand won't be a problem on it, it will take a while for it to wear out.

Well - I do not weld - so my "drag" is made of wood. It works just great - breaks up clods, smooths out tilled land, easy to pull - and, most importantly - raises a whole lot of dust. Notice - a set of large spikes across the front and same in the rear. I tow this abortion with a rope bridle attached to my ATV.

Welding rebar will make the rebar brittle which equals lots of breaking as you drag.

I don't need or use one but would a section of chain link fence work?

Im really looking for something to rip out weeds, and take off the high spots. If i could till it i would but i cant. So im prety much left with something i can tow behind an ATV without a motor.

I have about a 9 foot long section of 6 foot wide chain link fence, I have it folded over in half with a "T" post at fold and a length of chain attached about a foot in from ends of "T" post which forms a "V" and makes a loop at point of vee to hook on center shackel of draw bar.... If I need more weight I go over to the rock pile and put 4-5-6 fair sized rocks on it and drag away.... Also have about a 5 foot section of RR track with a couple of holed blown in each end to put chains through, and drag it when I need to knock gopher mounds or whatever down (also can be used on "chain link fence" harrow for weight)....

I have hurd that the chainlink ones get clogged up with grass/weeds and its almost impossible to clean out? Im working with 3/4ft weeds here. Of corse i will cut the big stuff down and most likely weed wack it. I dont have time to spray and burn. Im only there a week in the spring, a week in the fall and for hunting season.

Mabe i should just scrap this idea and hunt whats alreaty there.

About 4 or 5 sections of old railroad ties connected together by log chain will also work as a "bump leveler". You can add weight on top of the ties if necessary.

IF you are doing tall weeds I would think something like linked bars (angle iron/channel iron/pipe) would be better than chain or linked fencing harrow to knockdown tall stuff....
