Have You Been in a Movie?

Moby Dick with Ethan Hawke and William Hurt... I was an extra. Started out as a noble man of means and ended up as a wharf rat. Held that position for 2 weeks. Saw the movie - made for tv 2 parts - and I think I saw about 1 second of myself, slightly out of focus. It was fun, met some great people. In my previous career, I worked behind the scenes as a production designer for TV. Fun being on the other side of the camera. As the saying goes it's a "hurry up and wait" procedure. A bunch of the local crew got to go to Malta(largest indoor water tank for movies) for six weeks - during our winter months - great gig for them.

I was in a 2 part "Walker Texas Ranger" episode about an Indian race car driver, Team Cherokee, being harassed by other drivers that premiered 02/13/1999. We worked several weeks as the standby ambulance while the second unit filmed stunts at Texas Motor Speedway. When it came time for the big wreck scene the stunt driver rolled the car 8 times down the track. After we checked him out the real actor was placed in the car and they filmed us getting him out and driving off the track like we were going to the hospital. Made $67 as an extra plus they fed us. Two hours of filming made for about 20 seconds of air time. Most of my film time ended up on the cutting room floor.

The neat trick was how they made the car roll. They took a 2' piece of pipe and welded on a cap so one end was closed off. They cut a hole in the passenger side floorboard and welded the pipe to the roll cage with the open end level with the floor. A small piece of C4 was placed in the pipe and a 2' piece of telephone pole was wedged in making a small cannon shooting down. The stunt driver had a switch taped to the steering wheel connected to the charge. As he was going down the track he spun the wheel right putting the car in a slide and hit the switch. The telephone pole shot down flipping the car. There were 4 1 pound propane canisters under the car evenly spaced from front to rear with 1/4 second delay charges that fired as the car flipped making the fireball. The car rolled 8 times and came to rest on the wheels. The telephone pole was stuck in the track with the end sticking out of the ground splintered.

The TMS upper management were all out there to watch the crash. Instead they all were looking at this piece of telephone pole sticking out of the track. The NASCAR race was 2 weeks later and they had to scramble to dig up and patch the track.

This is the clip of the crash. Start at 3:55.

This is us getting him out at 1:00 minute in. I am the paramedic in the white shirt wearing sunglasses pushing the stretcher.

I wasn't, but my younger brother was on season 3 of TLC's Next Great Baker. Made it like 5-6 weeks.

As a teen my Dad was the Transportation guy for a movie called This Property is Condemned. I was there for some of the filming when they were in Bay ST Louis MS. My Dad was in one scent filmed in New Orleans. He walked across Jackson Square just as Robert Redford did.
All was very interesting as I met the stars and then their extras. Some were Natalie Wood, Jon Provost, Clint Walker, Robert Redford and several others. Very nice people.

I drove my 1972 Olds 98 (for a very fleeting view) in a movie called The Box with Cameron Diaz.

This past spring my 71 olds 88, and myself were at the filming, and in a couple of scenes, for the upcoming DAvid O. Russel movie American Hustle. Don't know if I will actually appear in the movie or not. It comes out on Christmas this year.

I was a French paratrooper extra in The Battle of Algiers(filmed in Algiers in 1966). It won quite a few awards and was nominated for a few academy awards. The film makers got white extras from the youth hostel. They took us to the barbershop for shaves and haircutting. We spent a very long day jumping from trucks and running through narrow streets with machine guns. They took our passports to make sure they'd get the guns back.

We were paid the equivalent of $14 I recall, and that was a lot of money. The problem was, that it was in Algerian currency (dinar?) and only good in Algeria, so we had to spend it before we left. The three of us travelling together had a Volkswagen so we drove down to the edge of the Sahara(town of Laghouat) to use up the money. I imagine one wouldn't survive that trip these days!

I just saw the movie a month ago after downloading it from YouTube.
