Hay ring vs unrolling.

Here the farmers will use both methods. Usually if they are feeding rolls of clover hay to dairy cows its in rings. Otherwise the field hay in rolls is unrolled like a jelly roll. Seems to be quite a bit of loss either way.

If on relatively level ground after twine or netwrap removal if one determines direction hay was rolled and puts frt tire of tractor against the opposite direction of rolling the frt tire will unroll the bale as tractor is driven forward. I've only done this unrolling of bale with a 2 wheel drive not a 4 WD but I think a 4 WD will work the same way

Jim,

On a four wheel drive you pull up with the front tire tight along the flat side of the bale and sort of turn into the bale as you go. With a slight down hill you can go pretty straight but on flat ground you end up with about a 30'-40' circle of hay.

Why 30'-40' circle? I've unrolled several bales on level ground that I had an OOPS with no netwrap applied by using frt wheel to unroll them relatively straight so I could re-bale with netwrap on them

I use our rolling pasture land to unroll hay. Other people use these.

We use one similar to the attachment that is made by Deweze. Works great.

We are rolling out hay this year. I can definitely see the waste when we put out too much. But if we put out just enough then they eat more than they mess up. We just use the tractor and the rolling hills to unroll it. The reseeding is an added plus since we are working on restoring and old rock quarry.

If I understand the way you are unrolling yours there is a difference in the way you and I are unrolling the hay.

What are you guys using to unroll that hay?

what I use is a device that attaches to my 3 point hitch, it has one long spike about 3 feet long that you spear the bale near the center ,it has 3 shorter spikes about a foot long that also penetrate the bale , it has a hydraulic pump and 2 hoses to attach to one of your remotes. So you just back ,spear the bale , take it to the cows , pull your remote lever and the bale will spin. The one I have I can spin a bale off in about 15 seconds. The one I have has this information written on it. A. S. I. Kimball, Ne 800-445-1001 . also has "RW Spin Off" written on it. It works great. You can spin off little piles of hay or just put out a windrow if you wanna. I highly recommend if you want to conserve hay.
