I think I should retract a small part of what I wrote.
I'm not anti-safety.
But I do think we have gone overboard with feeling "they" should protect us
from ourselves.

And, I'll confess, I have, on occasion:
- Run with scissors.
- Driven my tractor across the driveway without the seatbelt fastened.
- Rotated my chainsaw chain manually without wearing gloves.
- Used a screwdriver as a chisel/prybar.
- Pounded in at least one nail without complete eye protection.
- Drank - gasp - tap water.

Rick you are 100% correct NONE of us do everthing that is 100% safe. even the blasted medications we take can cause numerous problems. mY theory? be as safe as you can, but lets not over do it. right now i am running the A/C in the computer rm. according to experts i could get sick for the MOLD that MIGHT develop on the coils. WHERE does it end???

Lead paint was the best paint ever made. I can still get a variance from the historical society to use on exterior restoration. most of your marine paint is lead based. it is only toxic to children in developmental stage of life. an adult would have to consume so much to be toxic it is scary. I use to grind and burn lead paint for years hear in New England.

I have a theory. Anything we eat, anything we come in contact with, everything on this earth is harmfull to us in some fashion, some degree, some way. Watch exposure to the really really bad stuff, use everything in moderation, and try not to stress over the small stuff. Stress does as much, if not MORE to shorten your life as any single daily event.

Life has never been "safe" and we're all going to die. There have always been killjoys and people who think their role is to tell others what to do. The group currently pulling the environmental and product safety levers are of this ilk. They hide behind the environment and safety memes to justify their existence, the mandates they impose, and the problems they cause.

You will also find it interesting that the members of this group you mentioned are also heavilly invested in the alternative energies that will be our "salvation". You know, the only ones left after they legislate away the diesel and every other internal combustion engine because they are contributing to global warming.

And the American public eats it up, getting all upset while they drive along with their seat belt off in their hybrid, smoking a cig, eating a super-size big Mac, talking on the cell phone, running red lights and listening to NPR reporting trace elements of some inocuos substance in their game console cords.
