My son was stationed in ND for several (6) years and I seem to remember him telling me they didn't use salt on the roads due to runoff into streams and ponds. Instead, they used sand.
Anyhoo, he still has the 2001 F150 he bought there and it looks great, no rust. He always thoroughly cleaned it after traveling to MN or some other state that uses salt. I think that made the difference
