Kubota L5240: Craftsman GT6500
Monday after looking for more than a year I am gonna pull the trigger ( think) but need one more shot of courage.

Does anyone have any strong feelings about going to 4cyl or stay with the 3 cyl in the 3830??

Thanks Hugh

Hugh, the main reason you would consider the L4330 over the L3830 is the loader. It has a higher lift height and more lifting power. Other then that, comparing engines, my personal experience is that there is no difference between the design of 3 vs 4 cylinder diesels. Many industrial tractors still use 3 cylinder diesels much larger then the L4330's 4 cylinder. This topic has been discussed quite a bit. Most folks who are familiar with diesels have yet to make an argument that supports either one being superior to the other. I agree as my Kubota L48 was a 4 cylinder, my L3830 is a 3. My L3830 is quieter then the 4 cylinder L48. That could simply be due to muffler and tractor design rather then inherent in the diesel engines design. The L3830 diesel is a larger bore and stroke then the L4330's diesel.

If considering these two tractors, concern yourself mostly over the loader. Do you need the extra lift height? If so, get the L4330 with the LA 853, otherwise save a few thousand and opt for the L3830 with the LA 723, neither will disappoint you.

I went with the 4330 over the 3830 since I wanted the HST and the couple of extra HP made up for the loss of PTO HP due to the HST. Plus, that 853 loader is awesome! I love it! If it's a consideration, I have heard that fuel consumption rate is a tad higher for the 4330 (makes sense).

I have a 4330 GST and a 3010 HST. I have not put a pencil to it, but the 4330 seems to use twice as much fuel as the 3010. I wish my 4330 would turn into a 3830 HST. Maybe it will! If anything the 3 cyl. 3010 is smoother than the 4 cyl. 4330. Maybe because the 3010 has twice as many hours on it.

True, but I hear the L5030 and L4630 make more power then the L4330. Likewise, the L3830 makes more then the L3430 and the L3130. It's a vicious circle. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif The extra power I witnessed with the L4330 was well, a blind fold test may never allowed me to discern the difference. Now the extra loader height for dumping into a dumpster, there's a big bonus. If that's a concern, the decision is easy, go with any tractor that uses the LA 853.

The thing that got me to go with the 4330 the most was the heavier duty front axle, The loader and more power wasn't bad either ..Bill

Hugh,

I have the 4330 on order but have to admit that if I got the 3830 and used the price difference on more options, like TnT, a toothbar, hydraulic valves, etc, it would probably be a more useful tractor for the same price. I went bigger as insurance against kicking myself later.

Just picked up my new 3830 HST ,yesterday and took it for a little test run mowing about 2-3 acreas, and man let me tell you this thing is just to much fun. I'll post more tonight or tomorrow when ever I get off this thing.

I'm sure for just about every job the 3830HST, or 4330HST can run side by side, but if you have the extra money, and feel like you may need a little bit more power or lifting capacity go for the 4330. You wont be sorry either way as long as it's a Kubota.

When I was mowing the front of my property it was funny watching everybody driving by slow down to take a look at the new shiny orange beast.

John, I did kind of the same thing. I was all set to buy the L4610, but after seeing the L48, a loader that was much more powerful, a tractor with far more "meat" in it for a very similar price, I went with the L48. After having it for about 1.5 years, I sold it becasue after finnishing my large tasks, it was just to big. Basically, I bought to big. Familiar with industrial tractors and larger Kubotas made me think the L48 would be fine. I'm very happy having selected a smaller tractor and having the ability to remove the loader is an unbelieveable benefit for mowing. I suppose the message is, you can buy to big. In the case of the L3830 and L4330, the size is almost identical and the primary difference is definitely in the loader, after that, it just wasn't important. Having TnT is quite frankly, the only way to go and it's benefits cannot be empasized enough. I would rather have a L3130 - L3830 with TnT then a L4330 - L5030 with no TnT. Since you can put it on either for about $1200 and if you find needing the extra loader height important, the L4330 (or larger) with the LA 853 is the way to go. If the choice is between having or not having TnT because of budget constraints, the L3830 (or smaller) is the way to go. Rat...

i went with a 3830Hst to replace a Massey Ferguson 135, thought i was going down on power, really wanted the 4330 but priced too high and was afraid the 3130 was just too small and the 3430 only has about 3ftlbs torque over 3130, you are really gaining hp with a hydro not loosing it. the pto rating is with the tractor sitting still, mine is always moving when i use it, the travel speed can be slowed without effecting pto speed if your mowing something thick. i have owned two gear drive masseys and this hst and will tell you, you gain hp, don't believe the figures. if i had it to do over i would have probably gotten a 3130 with a loader for about the same price. i'm just waiting for them to figure out how to disconnect the steering and lift pumps for rating the pto hp so they can claim another 3 hp on pto. you will lose no more hp with the hydro than with power steering.
