The bad seal that you have was probably caused by whoever welded the nut onto the shaft. (they got the shaft too hot and burned up the seal.) I would also tend to think that the threads on the shaft must be stripped or whoever welded that nut on would have just tacked it on instead. But then how would they hold the nut on tight enough without threads to hold it down... Maybe there are enough threads left...

Maybe you could just weld up a franken-cutter and forget about the bad seal and use it like it is. Although it might drip grease out onto your pasture if you leave it like it is.

beenthere: I too have had some luck doing what you are referring to but in this case I just don't think it will work. If you could see it I think you would agree. It looks like they had their welder cranked up to maximum heat and the nut and the shaft is fused into one big ugly glob.

kubotadriver: If the top were not in such bad shape I would probably try to use it as is. I have run chassis grease in leaking cutters before and never burned one up - just shoot it full of grease every 8 hours or so. My fear on this one is that the top cannot support the gearbox and the vibration of the blades. It is gone.

you can't just weld straight to the gearbox with some plate steel? That would make it useable at least.

p.s. I have pretty much sworn off auctions and pawn shops for reasons such as this. Hidden problems that drive the price of an object up to nearly the price of a new one.

Back to your problem, I think that it would be a bad idea to try to rig that shaft with some funky engineering. I think you are on the right track to get a new shaft. If that blade holder were to go flying off of there at full speed the FAA might get UFO reports from over 100 miles away!

kubotadriver,
I think You are right sometimes you have to step back take a deep breath and decide if the project is worth it. I was thinking about those antique tractor restorations where you end up putting about twice as much into it as the finished tractor is worth even if it really is nice.

JM3,

You never cease to amaze me. Where you come up with this technical info and drawings I'll never know. This gives me an idea of what I'm getting into at least. Now if I can figure out if it is an OMNI or whatever it is.

I talked to the guy at the auction house and he told me to bring it back down there (it's only about 15 minutes away) and they would run it back through the first Saturday of April. He thought I would recoup most of my money. Unless I can positively identify the mfgt. of the gearbox I think that's what I'll do.

THANKS TO ALL FOR THE HELP!!!

Great - the auctioneer tells you to bring it back, and he gets paid each time he sells it. Sounds like stockbrokers.

/ HELP HELP WITH A BROKE BUSH HOG #19
Yeah, I agree. The auctioneer is the only one making money on this deal. I had (almost) $130. worth of fun with it anyway.
