My house is the last on a much-patched and spliced line running up our hill. I suspect there are holes in it, since the line squeals in the rain. Occasionally we connect at 4.4k /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif

I have a friend that works at a large Internet Service Provider. One thing you should know is that there is a BIG difference in the effectiveness of certain modems to handle poor line conditions. Long story short, some modems, like US Robotics for example, will connect and stay connected at much higher speeds than “no name” modems included as standard equipment with most PCs. If you connect at low speeds, or get “bumped off” frequently, suggest you try a US Robotics modem. You can always return it if it makes little difference.

You know, the funny thing about my connection is that while line noise forces my connect speed to my ISP way, WAY down at times, my connection to work when I dial in via Citrix is top speed and rock solid. Go figure!

Bird, you can thank your local Phone company for your slow connect speeds. When your connecting via your 56k modem on their infrastructre, depending on your location AND your ISP's, relative to their switching hubs, your connection may need to be converted to digital from analog and back again. Each time this 'switching' occurs, your connect speeds die on the vine.

Usually a call to your ISP will only result in their blaming the phone company and will not actually be able to add any solutions.

The only real solution is to look for another ISP, and before signing on the line, tell them that you want to test drive their service before agreeing on an account opening. That way, you can see if the connections they are going to provide get 'switched' too many times (as you are experiencing now) resulting in slow connect speeds or .. if they are an improvement.

Its FUN FUN FUN chaning email addresses too!

I'll shshshs now.

Even with US Robotics, there is a difference between the performance of hardware and software modems. If it says "winmodem" or not compatible with DOS operating systems, then it is a software modem and it will give you more problems and slower connect speeds than a top of the line USR modem.

Agreed. In general, a softmodem means slower connect speeds and frequent dropped connections.
