Yep, I understand the chain concept.

That transfers the vertical pressure all on the stabilizers. In anything less than solid footing they will bury themselves as you dig and you'll continually have to adjust until they have no more stroke to lower. Then you'll have to reset.

The stabilizers do not support all of the weight because as you dig, you pull on the lower links. A dedicated backhoe is rigidity attached to the tractor. Think of a teeter totter w/ the axle as the folcrum. With the BH on one end, you need equal stability on the other. Remember a dedicated BH is not really supported by stabilizers, their function is to oppose pulling forces so tractor doesn't slide. Your BH is not really attached to tractor, just hanging on lighy duty lower link arms.

I agree to an extent.

The stabilizers are there to control skid AND to control vertical and lateral forces. When running a hoe it quickly becomes apparent if the stabilizers have sank into the ground. More apparent in the swaying movement of the machine than the skidding. The pads on my 555A are too small. In soft timber ground I have to readjust them frequently. Sometimes I'll get so involved in the task at hand that I just periodically push the stabilizers down more when I feel that "slop". I've had them fully extended and buried out of sight. Have to use the hoe to lift them out of the ground to reset. I can also lift the front of the machine off the ground easily which then moves that fulcrum you talked about directly to the stabilizers. :)

I liked your description of a "sub frame" that you attached to your tractor. That transferred all that stress to the tractor chassis, distributed all the way forward to the FEL framework. Good stuff.

I bought this small back hoe over 14 years ago at an auction. It had been modified from frame mount to 3 point, with a solid bar replacing the top link. Used it for several years on the MF240D, no problems.
