Help me identify this backhoe attachment

Newbie here....would the smoothness be affected by the hydraulics or the tolerances during manufacturing? What makes one backhoe smoother than another...

It can be a combination of things, most impotently, operator experience - but some hoes are inherently easier and smoother to operate than others because of their construction - valves etc. I've never operated a Long but it just seems a bit more difficult to control than most - based only on these two videos I've seen. I'm sure that with practice, the operation will be much smoother than in the video Bruce posted.

As three point hoes go, this one is fairly large with a long reach. That is useful. I also like the manual, one of the better ones out there actually - and now you'll have it. You may need to replace all the hoses, redo the seat and the cylinder seals may leak - it's obviously been sitting by itself for a while - that should be considered in deciding on a price. Hoses and fittings are costly - even if you have them done at NAPA instead of a dedicated hydraulics shop. Check on line for the price of TPH hoes, used and you'll get an idea if this is one you want for $1200. I do believe that price is north of what I would pay.

On the other hand, once you've had a hoe, you will never go back to a shovel - I love having one and find it useful for all sorts of tasks - including rear ballast for my 4n1 bucket.

The rods on the boom and dipper cylinders appear to be rusted. Others should be checked for rust. Rebuilding a cylinder can get expensive. No sense in replacing a seal if the rod is rusted.

I would agree with all of tyhe above. I will get some more information and take some more pictures and report back. Generally speaking, for those that have owned the Long backhoes have been satisfied.

Unless you want to do some rebuilding, I'd likely not pay more than $500 for it. You could need all of the cylinders rebuilt, plus new valves.

That was around the price I was thinking, might offend the owner/friend who thinks highly of it. One can pick up a used hoe in fair condition on Craigs List from time to time and they show up at auctions pretty regularly in the < $1000 range.

I ended up purchasing this attachment, expect to start moving dirt in the next week or so. Total investment, including the purchase price is $2,300. I cant buy a new one for that, or one made with american steel with bushings. Im content i made the purchase. I eliminated the PTO pump and plan to run off the remotes on the tractor....i also replaced the control valve with a Walvoil (italian made) valve from surplus center. All hoses and fittings are discount hose supply.com of which i crimped and cut myself. I replaced the rods in the cylinders and repacked them myself.

In Bruce's video I just watched the first minute. Couldn't stand to watch anymore of it. Operator doesn't understand the concept of a hoe.

I wouldn't like the seat swinging with the boom but I guess you'll get used to it. When your efficiency improves and you get faster that may be uncomfortable.

Anxious to hear your report on using the tractor hydraulics. I think that method is going to slow the hoe down a lot. Can't think your rear remote GPM is anywhere near what the PTO pump would produce. Hope I'm wrong.
