So far I’m “toe to toe” with you guys...

Mike: Also thought of cap as the old one was original and had a nick in the gasket, so I’ve put a new one on. Beyond that, I’ve not pressure tested anything. I DID have a loose hose clamp that I simply had forgot to reattach, fixed it too. It was very difficult to see, especially with the stream of water steaming out of it, and given that it was the highly visible, LARGE hose in the front, top center of engine that was hidden by some insect flying by... /w3tcompact/icons/eyes.gif /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Bgott: I am ½ way toe to toe with you, I did spray some water on the belt, however, I sprayed on the belt to the a/c compressor given my then belief that it was the culprit. I might do that again, and focus on the other belt. Given the amount I sprayed I THINK I probably got the crank pulley wet..but since I cant attest to that, probably good idea to check. When I go that far, I think I’ll also simply take all front belts off again. I think that will pretty much prove that it’s belt related, and if not, I think the only other reasonable conclusion is the tensioners (which is sadly becoming the “gut feeling” I’m not wanting to admit)

LIGHT BULB!!! What was that I was saying about switching gears? I don't know why I was thinking that the Miata was a FWD???? I apologize if I confused anyone. /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif I am truly getting my a$$ tore up by an 89 Camry right now, so my mind is elsewhere. /w3tcompact/icons/sad.gif

You say you had a water leak. If it was a leak high on the engine. It is possible that after the engine cooled, and pressure dropped, you sucked some air in.

On the other deal, try what the other guy had mentioned, and remove all belts and see if the squeal goes away. If it is the timing idlers, you're going to have to pull off all the belts & accys anyway, so it's not wasted work.

Since theyre are some Mazda guys in the equation now, I humbly bow out before I stick my other foot in mouth. /w3tcompact/icons/hmm.gif

If there are any Toyota techs here, speak up, and we can start a hummdinger thread about an 89 Camry./w3tcompact/icons/tongue.gif

I'm not a toyota tech (independent) But I do work on them. Most 89 camarys are rusted beyond state inspectable.

Rich, I wonder with that many miles if the belt pulleys are worn? Used to be a Caterpillar mechanic and it did happen to machines that ran in the dirt pretty regular. My old Chevy truck had a squeeler that was the alternator belt, a new belt would cure it for a while, the long lasting cure was a better used pulley. The sides of the grooves get a belly in them and the belt wants to go to the bottom of the groove. Could happen with a rib belt setup also. The intemittent nature could be the alternator loading and unloading. Wallysue

Go ahead and hang some idlers and/or tensioners. As someone that has had to re-do a LOT of repairs I can guarantee you can get the job done twice as fast the second time around! You need to watch your timing belt tension, also. You can get it too tight, then you'll have a whine.

"I am truly getting my a$$ tore up by an 89 Camry right now, so my mind is elsewhere."

I feel your pain. I hate Toyotas with a passion. Piss poor designed little POS's to work on and the book time pays just about half of the time it takes to fix it right. This thing isn't a V6, is it? the first one I put head gaskets in ate my lunch. I got into it and then went and looked at the book, it paid 24 hours! That meant a 48 hour job!!! The machine shop screwed up the heads and it had cam rap from he11. The next one I did I dumped the motor out in the dirt, that saved some time but I still had way over 24 hours in it. What's wrong with your's?

I'll start another post about the Camry.
Thanks for the interest.
