Tiller HELP My new used tiller turns the wrong way

/ HELP My new used tiller turns the wrong way #31
The grey market tillers use a "C" style tine, not a "L" style tine that more common on new tillers. When they are in good condition, they perform very well and are not limited to "rice" work. I see absolutely no need to convert it to "L" tines if you can find replacements.

I am among those who converted "L" tines to "C" tines on my brand new GEO tiller, but not for rice work. :)

When I get a chance I will try to turn some tines 180 degrees and put them back into their socket, if they will go.

Be careful, I'm afraid the "C" type tines couldn't be turned in 180 degrees at their sockets if the rotation of the shaft isn't reversed.

Why not test it out by backing up and tilling the ground. This should indicate if reversing would help you.

After digesting the good informaton that has been provided here I tried the tiller yesterday afternoon. I didn't do anything to it except adjust the top link so the tiller could be powered and not be jamed up against rear wheels.

The ground is a little wet but the tiller semed to do OK with two passes. The first pass basically made wide slits in the soil but the second pass loosened it up and a third pass left it pretty smooth, for wet dirt.

I also tried to back the tractor up with the tiller turning and when I lowered it the tiller sort of jamed up and the tines stopped turning. I might try to shorten the top link to see if the tiller will work better and allow the tines to turn as I back up.

That may not be necessary because the tiller appears to work well just as it is, even with the worn tines.

When the soil dries out I will give it a better test.

Thanks for your candid input, especially "Villengineer" and "Kays Supply" who actually have this model. For the small garden I will be tilling doing a third pass might just be the answer for a nicely turned garden plot.

The chances are your three point hitch is not conducive to backward operation of a counter clockwise rotating tiller.:)

I think what you're saying is that if his 3 point hitch can float up, which it probably can ... along with the rotation of the tines, which would be with the direction of travel when backing up ... would cause the tiller to kind of ride on top of the soil? (unless it had a very heavy weight added to it)

That's what it appeared to be doing yesterday.

You've been given a lot of misinformation from well meaning people. Only go forwards when operating your tiller in the ground. Your lucky you didn't break something, like the tractor PTO.

Your tiller is 'forward rotation'. I had a 'reverse rotation' tiller for 13 years. it did a fantastic job of tilling. Even if yours would have been 'reverse rotation' it would have worked fine with proper tines.

Find new tines to fit your tiller and have fun with it.
