Sorry to hear of this problem. The others have already stated what I would think as the cause. Please keep us advised of what you find as this could happen to anyone of us.

Re: HELP!MyPT425stopped deadinits tracks,andwon\'tstart

Well guys here is a recap of my efforts with the green beast today.....I backed off the 'towing nut' 3/4 turn and pulled it back from the water's edge with my wife's car to a place where it would be easier to work on.

I took off the top panel with steering wheel attached. I thought I found the problem when I saw the five pronged connection hanging loose under the key switch, but then I realized that I pulled it off when I raised the black panel an inch or so. There is no slack in this connector. To put it back on, I had to take off the front black panel and reach around everything. I must say that there is no extra room on these PT's for big hands like mine!

Then I checked the 30amp fuse closest to the starter and it was blown. I should have checked it first /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif. I replaced the fuse, turned the key and it fired up, but wouldn't start, and more significantly, wouldn't stop firing when I turned the key off. I ended up pulling off one of the battery cables which stopped the starter, but not before it pretty much killed the battery. And the starter was really hot. I waited a few minutes, reconnected the battery cable and took off the driver's side plug end and when I turned the key on this time, while the battery struggled to turn the engine over, there was no spark either. And again, as before, when I turned off the key, the starter still kept turning over the engine. I again pulled a battery cable to stop the starter. However, the new fuse did not blow during this process.

So I'm not sure if the problem is the ignition switch, the starter, the starter solenoid, or some combination of these, or something else entirely!

I'll call Terry in the morning, but if any of you shrewd mechanics out there can shed some light on the subject it would be appreciated......Thanks in advance!! Tom

Re: HELP!MyPT425stopped deadinits tracks,andwon\'tstart

sounds like the solenoid stuck in

Re: HELP!MyPT425stopped deadinits tracks,andwon\'tstart

Check ign switch by removing start wire from starter solenoid. Turn the key on and measure volts at the wire you removed from the solenoid, should read zero volts. Leave meter hooked and turn key to start pos. You should read 12 v. If that checks good, the ign switch is ok. Now, use a jumper wire or screw driver to activate the starter. If the starter keeps running, starter solenoid is sticking. You can also put 12 v directly to the pos terminal of starter to directly check out the starter. If the starter starts and stops when you apply and remove voltage, the starter is good .

Keep in mind, that some starters use solenoids, not attached to starter.

Re: HELP!MyPT425stopped deadinits tracks,andwon\'tstart

Are you sure you got the 5 prong connector replaced correctly?

Re: HELP!MyPT425stopped deadinits tracks,andwon\'tstart

Thanks for the comeback toy and j j....details to follow! The five prong connector can only go on one way ernemats so I'm confident I got the thing on correctly......

Re: HELP!MyPT425stopped deadinits tracks,andwon\'tstart

I haven't worked on your particular engine, so I'm going from general info. It is hard to theorize a single problem that can cause your trouble. A sticking starter solenoid can blow the fuse, and recur when you replace the fuse. The engine shutdown, however, isn't easily explained. I assume the switch kills the engine by grounding the mag wire, which should be completely independent of the starter circuit, and for that matter, any 12v circuit. It seems unlikely that the switch or wiring would fail so as to energize the starter circuit and ground the mag, unless something is pretty melted.
Checks of the starter circuit have been suggested. If it doesn't stick independent of the "ignition" switch, try unhooking that plug again, and jumping to the starter again with it off. If the engine starts, you can suspect a switch failure. Of course, then you have a problem getting the engine to stop. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
On my 1845, the guy doing the wiring didn't want to cost the boss anything extra, so there is also little slack anywhere, That has made it prone to pull a connection apart on its own, now and then. Some connectors and screw connections were assembled with considerable strength, as well, resulting in some broken strands. Again, however, I can't think of any single failure that will shut down the engine and evergize the starter. (There isn't a solenoid operated fuel shutoff or a relay in the mag ground that is held open when energized, is there?)

Re: HELP!MyPT425stopped deadinits tracks,andwon\'tstart

I experienced the same exact problem with mine with less that 50 hours. It is a loose starter wire (red). It is a poor design. It just slides on and can easily slide off if there is a lot of jaring with the machine. I'm almost positive this is is. I had the same thing happen and as soon as I found it and reconnected it. Started right up good as new. Hope this helps. Let me know John

John,
Welcome to TBN and the PowerTrac family.
Appreciate your suggetion on this which sounds like a fast and easy fix. So far I have not had this problem but when and if I do I know now what to look for,
PJ
