Guys, I'm new at the tractor game and have a question on what oil are you using for the diesel engine. The owners manual doesn't give much info, taking on what the manual had as far as oil goes sf cd series 3 doesn't help much, I looked at two differn't places today at 15W40 diesel oil but couldn't find any of these classification letters. First time diesel engine owner. Thanks in advance. SP

Open the hood. look on the top of the engine valve cover. Hard to see, but it is back on top near the rear of the engine.
Bring a light.
It shows the Oil Type.

Snowplow: you may be looking in the wrong store. I looked for diesel oil in Walmart and didnt find any with the certs for a diesel engine other than synthetic and I didnt want that right now. I found plenty at the local Atwoods farm supply though.

Any oil that you find with a two-letter API rating beginning with 'C' and ending with any letter higher than 'D' will meet (and exceed) the CD specification in your manual. You probably won't find an oil with a CD specification as that spec is obsolete.

Pretty straight forward. Look at your recommended type like CF and any oil with CF or higher rating (CG,CI ) is good to go. Same for all the other classifications. Looks to be a straight alph rating that started with CA and has now reach CI with higher letters being better grades of oil and acceptable for any lower grade classification. I dont think I have seen any of the SM rated oils but then again I havent shopped for oil in a while ,like summer of 2010 when I bought a case of oil for my Yanmar.

Keep it simple, If it is a diesel, Shell Rotella T will work for you. 15W40 unless you live in a very cold climate, then the synthetic version is your huckleberry. Both are available at WalMart.
