Maybe I'll give earthtools a call too - it's worth it to shop around.

Hey Coaster

0-2 I was wrong on the shaft price. Maybe I was thinking of the tine shaft.

Needlawnmowerparts.com is obsolete. I placed an order about a year back. After a day, they refunded my credit card and said they couldn't process my order. They also said they were gonna delete the BCS stuff, but apparently haven't.

Farmerboy,

Ha!! No worries. I received a message back today from BCS Shop and they said that they do not offer the complete gearbox. I told him of my concerns about putting it all together again myself and he said that if I sent it to him, he'd do it for $50.00 plus the parts and send it back to me - well, that's an option I'll have to mull over.

I talked to the guy that I bought it from and he said that he had just bought the whole attachment (with the PTO adaptor) just 2 years ago. He was shocked that it had broken. I tell you what though, the gearbox did not look like it was only 2 years old - no telling what the history is there.

Interesting to hear about Needlawnmowerparts.com - bummer there. I liked the way that you could get a price for parts there. It would have been nice if they had a graphic of each part, but I guess it doesn't matter anyway since they no longer provide those parts.

I think I will check with Earthtools though.

thx!!

If you have a decent repair shop locally they can get the parts for you. I ordered the 2 side seals, left red plastic lever, and couple of other things locally and they were better priced than if I would have ordered them with shipping..for thought

Grut, good point. I'll see what we have around the way here.

Try looking here BCS Dealer Locator for a bcs dealer. We have a few close to where I live, but 2 of them only do repairs. But I'd really call earthtools.

Putting it together shouldn't be too hard. Don't just beat the pinion shaft w/bearing in with hammer since you can't push the bearing in by the outer race and will be pushing the whole bearing. I used a deadblow hammer and a block of wood, while being very sure to keep it straight. IIRC you can use the front bearing to keep the shaft aligned during assembly. Some would argue you should use a press, I think being careful with a deadblow hammer gives more feel to it. Just think straight with as little impact as possible.

Grut, I guess that the closet dealer I could find was not "decent". What I've found is that John @ bcsshop.com seems to have the best prices on the parts. And he seems to have them in stock to ship. The closest dealer to me had the price marked up about 20% per part and they would have to order them - Ugghhh. Earth Tools gave me a price that was at least close to BCS Shop, but not better, and they did not have them in stock. So I'm gonna have BCS Shop ship the parts and we'll go from there - wish me luck. :)

Just to wrap this one up, I did order the parts from BCS Shop. They just arrived yesterday and I put the gearbox back together. That was slow going as the pinion shaft is a tight fit through the bearings, but it all went back together just the way that it was supposed to. Used some RTV silicone around threads and seals, filled it with oil and all seems to be good. I tested it this evening without the tines attached and engaging the PTO turns the axle as expected. I'll be putting the tines on tomorrow, attaching the hood for the tiller and I'll give it a test run.

Thanks to all who had some input here - not sure where I would have ended up without your suggestions.
