I need a used, easy to maintain diesel compact tractor, for mowing, fertilizing, and using manure spreader on 12 acres of horse pasture that is somewhat hilly. Decent availability of used parts. Want to keep it under $5,000 if possible. Any suggestions of brands and models?

Many thanks,

We would all like to find a deal like that. Do you need a CUT for the smaller size? For the money, you might want to look for a FORD 4000 or 5000 for your 12 acres. The larger tractor will give you additional stability on the hills. Good luck!

I've got a Yanmar 4wd. It's a great little tractor and parts are easy to get.

You need to know there are two product lines in compact tractors of many brands but not all. Those made for the US market and in English and with US required safety items and those called Grey Market which were not made for the US market and manuals and parts can be an issue for them, in English. There are some grey market tractors which seem to have a good source of parts but others seem to be orphans.

Unless light weight is desired for mowing I would look at small farm tractor like the Ford 3,000 or Massey 135. At lot in used depends on your local market.

Any of the 3 cyl fords in the 2000/3000/4000 series.

good diesels.. easy to get parts.. solid tractors.

try for an 8spd with live pto ( or independent ont he 4000 ) and good working power steering.

If you like diesel.. deffinately stay 65+ on fords.. if you like gassers... then 55-64 is my recomendation.. IE.. a ford 860/861.. that gives you 45ish eng hp, live pto and 5 spd gearing.. good solid tractor.

I love my Yanmar. That would work great for you. I also will mention the Ford 2n, 8n, and 9n. Since they are always being parted out or restored, i cant imagine that parts woul be a problem. They are 2wd though, so I will mention that several Yanmar's are available with 4wd. Like my 169d. My Yanmar has been a very reliable tractor to me, the only thing that i need to replace is the front axle seal. Other than that, it works great.

I'd go for the later fords vs the N series.. you get better axle seals, hyds and pto and gearing options.
